HALI '06, Yo

Just wondering if anyone has any input on when the first Kill Frost will be around the Haliburton, ON, Canada area will be???? I have 9 plants going up there and it looks like they could use all the time they can get. From what I remember, I harvested on Oct. 11 last year.

Hey man, I'm in the same boat down here in CT. For me I use weather.com and go into the lawn & Garden section and it tells me for the next 10 days what the frost picture looks like. I just checked for Haliburton and it says it doesn't do Canada, so maybe you have a local weather site, but they should be able to let you know what the frost situation looks like.

I use this site:

http://www.theweathernetwork.com/fea...s/CAON0740.htm

it says frost is expected, but i doubt that it will be a heavy one. Temps are barely dropping to 30F at night for a short period....plus there are lakes and all over the place up there, so i think the air is pretty moist and the climate temprate.

I will be going up on friday to see how things are and making the decision to pull or wait.

thanks for the input....i'll post some pics when i get a chance.

Now my question is this, will the frost actually effect the potency or anything else of the buds? Or just kill the plant and force you to harvest. Because if all it does is kill the plant then let the dice roll and see what happens, but if it effects the smoke then I can justify pulling it early.

If the plant is killed by frost, the quality will be sacrificed completely. You have to harvest before a kill frost, otherwise the pot will be useless. I am saying, however, that the frost that is expected to hit this Thursday will be light enough not to affect plants that are as established as the ones that I am growing. Therefore, I am going to risk it, and leave them out to weather the frost. I think they will be fine.

Gotcha, but yours are in pots, can you bring them inside? That's what I do with mine. Although it's a complete pain in the ass and it stinks up the entire house.

Bringing them inside at night is a great option to have. I cannot do this because I will not be in that area all the time. This is a remote location and would be impossible to cart them back and forth to some kind of house or shelter. Moving them into a thicker area where there are small shrubs, etc. seems like a good idea to me though....it might help to keep any heat in and around the pot.

I just want to stress this point......These plants are well established and a light frost will do nothing to them! I have faith in these things and am not worried at all about what will happen to them this weekend. I am more concerned about the following week or 2 that I would like to leave them out for.

Gotcha. As "marie-jane" pointed out in another post, you can mulch the base to keep them insulated at night.

The frost forecast has just been downgraded from "Expected" to "A Chance", so that makes me feel even better about my decision. ZING!

I have just received word from the North.....the plants have weathered the weather and are in great shape! The buds have swelled since the last visit and there are no signs of frost damage at all!! The temps have been dipping down to -2C at night and the pistils are slowly turning from purple to red.....I very excited to visit them tonight and check out the trichs with the 10x/100x magnifier. I think it's looking like we are going to chop 4 of the 9 tonight and leave the rest for another week or so. The weather is supposed to improve over the weekend and throughout next week! I will definately have pics to post upon my return to the city. ZING!
