Where's owner of gigantic pot stash? Detroit police, looking for suspects, say it was worth $17 million BY BEN SCHMITT FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER 305 words 9 April 2005 Detroit Free Press 3 English (c) Copyright 2005, Detroit Free Press. All Rights Reserved. Detroit police have put a price tag on the large seizure of marijuana earlier this week: $17 million in street value. But whose pot is it? "No one has been arrested at this time," police spokesman James Tate said Friday. "But it remains open," he continued. "The narcotics enforcement unit will pursue all individuals suspected to be connected to this illegal operation." Acting on a tip from a Detroit drug investigation, , narcotics officers raided the vacant warehouse in the 15100 block of Hamilton in Highland Park on Thursday morning, Tate said. Inside, they found over 9,000 pounds of marijuana. portioned into 205 bales. "We believe it to be strictly a storage and distribution site," Tate said, adding that, for the city, "This is definitely one of the largest marijuana seizures in recent history." Tate said that in recent years there has been increased violence surrounding the marijuana trade. "That's why it's important for us to investigate all known dealers, big and small," he said. Tate said police have already confiscated $75 million worth of narcotics this year, close to last year's seizure total of $85 million. Tim Beck, executive director of the Michigan branch for the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), said Friday that law enforcement officials lumping in the marijuana trade with other drugs sometimes disturb him. "Most of the persons that sell marijuana are just part-time people making money on the side, who aren't violent at all," Beck said. "The dealers that mix in marijuana dealing with cocaine and crack -- that's where the violence emanates." Contact BEN SCHMITT at 313-223-4296 or schmitt@freepress.com.
