Among other ballot items across the country:

_ In Ohio, voters approved a measure that will allow casinos in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and Toledo. Four similar measures had been defeated in recent years, but this time the state's reeling economy gave extra weight to arguments that the new casinos would create thousands of jobs.


_ Maine voters defeated a measure that would have limited state and local government spending by holding it to the rate of inflation plus population growth. A similar measure was on the ballot in Washington state.

_ Another measure in Maine, which easily won approval, will allow dispensaries to supply marijuana to patients for medicinal purposes. It is a follow-up to a 1999 measure that legalized medical marijuana but did not set up a distribution system.

_ The Colorado ski town of Breckenridge voted overwhelmingly to allow adults to legally possess small amounts of marijuana.

A couple of small victories in the polls in Maine, and Colorado.

It's interesting to me that when lawmakers and courts are involved, they almost always decide against us. When it's on a ballot though, and the people get a say, it seems like easy victory for our side.

Great news for MJ, further dissapointing news for gays rights. I think since its a controversial topic with most of the conservative bastards in this country, Obama might do something great for them if he gets his second term. And I think Obama is waiting for the approval rating of marijuana to go up before he does anything about it, to secure his victory for the second term.

It's the voters that are voting down same sex marriage. Legislators and state officials are passing laws in favor of it, but every time it hits the polls, the scared Jesus freaks come out in force to shoot it down.

Why do people care if gays marry. Married gays do not affect those who are straight themselves. Most gay people just want to be left alone.

I'm straight myself, and I would think "good for you" if I saw a gay couple.

You and me both man. Every time I see a same sex marriage proposal get voted down I feel sad for humankind. How can anybody say that this is not discrimination?

I too am straight, married with kids in fact, but I have people in my life, for whom I care deeply that live the gay lifestyle. I hope that someday they can get married and live with the partner they choose. Until the small minded, fear mongering idiots learn to stop fearing other people's choices, I'm afraid this will never happen for them.

Unfortunately, It's the same kind of situation we face trying to get public and legal acceptance of marijuana. Fear and un reason rule, while we sit here wondering when we will get a fair chance to live our lives as we see fit.
