Feds Won't Pursue Medical Marijuana Users, Sellers Abiding By State Laws - NPR Health Blog : NPR

The Associated Press reports new guidelines making the change official are expected to go out to federal prosecutors today. Sellers and smokers in 14 states that allow pot to be used for medical reasons, including California and Maryland, will be able to breathe a little easier from now on.

A couple of unnamed Justice Department officials told the AP that it's a waste for the feds to arrest pot users and their suppliers when they're in compliance with state laws.
Back in March, Attorney General Eric Holder said the feds wouldn't bust medical marijuana suppliers who complied with state laws, making good on President Obama's campaign promises. But there was still some confusion about the details.

Obama, in an interview with the Medford Mail Tribune in Oregon the year before, said about the legalization of marijuana for medical use, "I'm not going to be using Justice Department resources to try to circumvent state laws on this issue."

It is a STEP in the right direction, but not the final step for sure. All this means is that patients are safe from FEDERAL prosecution, as are caregivers. However with the word 'caregiver' up to leal interpretation, AND State laws constantly in flux, the directive is really just strengthening what we already had. VERY few patients have ever been prosecuted at the Federal level for just being patients. Those previously prosecuted by the Feds have had collective grows or have been operating dispensaries. Neither one of those scenarios are covered here.

Besides which the DEA was never interested in prosecuting anyone other than club owners anyway. Throughout all the raids conducted in CA by the DEA under the Bush Regime, not one PATIENT was ever arrested for just being a patient (IIRC there were a couple of patients arrested for illegal firearms possession).

It's still a step in the right direction, and is actually a President following up on one of his promises, as the Marijuana Policy Project has pointed out.

So that's a plus.

Also - Scat, I'm not sure that the legalization initiative will even make it on the ballot this November, can you provide where you saw that it would be?

now that the feds respect state law it will happen im sure of it
you look at trends in any policy
calfornia state law is almost always eventually adopted by all states
so locally other states will allow for despeseries and medical use
once people realize that marijana prohabition is bull shit like those in cali for the most part......it will become legalized
at least i hope thats how it will happen
it may take 20 years but it will happen
