Re: Cannabis May Alter Human DNA?

The molecules found in pretty much any organic matter, whether it be tobacco, weed, or steak, contain various aromatic rings. When these substances are combusted, you often end up with carcinogenic compounds. When you inhale these compounds, your risk of developing cancer increases.

Not that complicated folks. You're free to believe that weed is harmless, but the fact is the human body was not designed to tolerate smoke and it causes a lot of problems regardless of the specific plant you happen to be burning. This isn't going to stop me from toking - the world has a 100% mortality rate anyway so I might as well enjoy my time here.

I do agree that this study is obviously designed to scare people. The title implies to a layman that it is a permanent change that you are going to pass on to your children or something. This is not the case, unless it is a mutation in your germ-line cells, and I would think that the vast majority of mutations related to this would be in somatic cells rather than sperm/egg lines.

Great post. Even if every scientist unanimously agreed that marijuana had some chance of causing inheritable DNA mutations, this would not be a problem if we pumped the 100 Billion dollars we lose annually on the war on drugs into Stem Cell Research. Even if the risk of smoking one joint a month for a year was a 90% cancer diagnosis, this could all be repaired with Stem cell research that is sufficiently advanced.

Re: Cannabis May Alter Human DNA?

Yeah this study has vague written all over it. They use those general words and they don't state what strains they are testing or what brands of cigarettes were used. Plus, that's 3-4 joints a day, not everyone does that, I don't. Also, that is just through combustion, so are they saying eating and vaporizing are all good? This is hardly a good case against legalizing it. Cigarettes have been known to cause cancer for many years now and it's hardly illegal...unless you want to count those laws against public smoking.

Re: Cannabis May Alter Human DNA?

Any smoke is bad for you as you inhale tiny particles of partially burned hydrocarbons that have the capicity to latch onto DNA causing cell injury or cancers.

Right, but WRONG.

Cannabis smokers showed LESS incident of cancer than non cannabis smokers.

So it actually helps PREVENT cancer accodrding to the latest greatest research.

+rep man, once again excellent post.

EDIT: Come to think of it, I wish every time one of these "legitimate" studies comes out, they were forced to post a response by an intelligent smoker side-by-side with the article to make sure people get all the facts.

That last sentence pretty much goes against everything this country was founded for.

Re: Cannabis May Alter Human DNA?

I saw them saying this on Brink last night. I liked how they had some preppy girl playing the lead scientist. Even though I never watch the show and just happened to stop at the word Marijuana, I will never give this show another chance.

Re: Cannabis May Alter Human DNA?

This is like making lighters illegal because the gas that comes out of those probably isn't very good for you to breathe in.

You can tell prohibition works when ordinary citizens are hoping for one gang to gain superiority to establish stability.

Does this mean that we shouldn't go outside because the sun can cause skin cancer?
