| Uk: Don't spunk your money on 'spun' skunk, honey
As the Government prepares to relax the laws on cannabis, smokers are being conned into buying inferior 'spun skunk', which looks like normal skunk but contains little or no THC, meaning it hardly gets a user stoned.
Unscrupulous dealers are extracting the THC from skunk using a process involving a tumble dryer-style drum, which the plant is placed into and then spun, flinging off the resin glands that contain much of the plant's THC.
This 'decaf' plant is then vacuum-sealed into plastic bags and sold on as normal skunk. The dealers hang onto the resin and make it into hashish.
How to spot Spun Skunk
LOOK:
Hold the bud up to the light. Resin glands are crystalline in appearance - moving the bud at an angle should normally reveal glints of THC all over . Spun skunk does not glister.
SMELL:
Good quality skunk is strong-smelling. Spun skunk has hardly any aroma - if you can describe dry mildewy lawngrass as an aroma.
TOUCH:
Break the bud with your fingers. A copious layer of white powder should be left on them - this is the THC. Little or no powder means you're being spun a line!
You can invest in an illuminated eyepiece or 'loop' (15x is good). This is what some coffeeshop owners in the Netherlands use to assess quality. By looking at the bud up close, it is easy to see resin glands - or their absence.
There is also now a simple home test for checking cannabis quality. The Hemptest C has been developed by an Austrian scientist and is a reagent added to a sample of cannabis mixed with pure alcohol to dissolve the active constituents.
After a vigorous shake, the resultant colour will tell you if your skunk is the real thing.
Needless to say, this isn't the first time that low-quality cannabis has been introduced into the market. 'Soapbar' hash has been shown to be a nasty concoction of toxic chemicals with a cannabinoid content.
