"The report is based on 136,110 people aged 12 and older who were interviewed for a national survey in 2005-2006."

They rely on people telling them

What does this tell us
Quote:
Utah has the nation's highest percentage of adults who report feeling "serious psychological distress" over the past year.
At 14.4 percent, the rate was significantly higher than the lowest state, Hawaii, at 8.8 percent.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration data released today is based on 2005 and 2006 surveys of 136,110 Americans. It is the most up-to-date data available.

Other results:
- Utah has the lowest level of underage drinking. Only 21.5 percent of those surveyed from age 12 to 20 reported using alcohol in the past month, in contrast to 38.3 percent in Vermont.
- Utah's has the lowest percentage of people age 12 and older who used marijuana in the prior month, at 4.3 percent. Vermont was the highest in the nation, at 9.7 percent.
- Utah also stood out for its low tobacco use. Among residents age 12 and older, 22.1 percent reported using tobacco the month before. By contrast, 40.6 percent of West Virginia residents reported such use.

Maybe, low drug use = high rates of depression?

You said it!
Imagine how depressed Utah would be without Prozac and Xanax, which are also used pretty widely there...Legally!

Since it relies on self reporting, these figures are probably a bit low. How many Mormons will describe themselves as depressed? And if the numbers are low, then the mean us average would imply a total of 40-50 million total americans. More than Xanax, Prozac and Valium combined!

Wonder why pharma won't back legalization....?????????

Doesnt suprise me at all! Knew we were one of the top states! Vermont really has the most vibrant marijuana culture out there, especially in Chittenden County. There are several towns in this county that have more smokers than non, and yes there is a bill in the process of being ratified that would decriminalize Marijuana. Woot!
