Elaine Ilana Meiri, 42, is being held on $70,000 bail and will return to court Thursday. She was arrested last Thursday after police found about 45 pounds of processed marijuana, packaging materials, computers, prescription medications, controlled substances and more than $4,500 in cash in her house, police said. A 12-year-old boy at the house was turned in to Child Protective Services after police served the search warrant, said Sgt. Dave Barrow of the Chico Police Department. He did not know Meiri's relationship to the child. A search warrant was issued after a suspicious package was reported at a Chico UPS Store on Feb. 26, police said. The package allegedly contained more than three pounds of marijuana Meiri tried to send to Hawaii. Meiri started teaching Hebrew this semester, said Joe Wills, director of public affairs and publications. Junior Grant Thornton, a student in Meiri's fourth-semester Hebrew class, said he was shocked to hear about the charges against her. "I thought it was a huge joke," Thornton said. He said Meiri was a good teacher and more easy-going in her teaching style. She was the only instructor to teach conversational Hebrew. Fernando Acuna, the coordinator for the Self Instructional Language Program, said he doesn't know if Meiri will return to teach her classes. Galila Whitmarsh has taken over the classes for the time being. The university is not allowed to release possible disciplinary action against Meiri, Wills said. Acuna told Meiri's students to refer all questions to Wills. Denver Troyer, 56, who police said might be Meiri's roommate, also appeared in court Monday. He was arrested at the scene Thursday and charged with possession of marijuana for sale, possession of a syringe and possession of controlled substances, police said. He is being held on $10,000 bail and will also return to court Thursday. The court will appoint him a lawyer, said Judge William Lamb. Meiri's lawyer, Dane Cameron, could not be reached by press time. Lamb ordered the defendants be held in custody until court officials can make sure they don't use drug money to pay for bail. "When someone is accused of drug crimes, that's something you'll see frequently," said Deputy District Attorney Kit Carson. " wow. sucks for her. i guess chico's party reputation still exists huh? |
