Oh Amsterdam, what have you done? :(
Handbags replace hookers
19/01/2008 22:33 - (SA) Amsterdam, Netherlands - Instead of selling sex, Amsterdam is trying to sell sexy. The city unveiled its "Red Light Fashion" project on Saturday, having converted 16 buildings that used to house prostitutes in the city's ancient red light district into studios for young fashion designers. The idea was born out of the government's desire to crack down on crime in the area and it is not certain it will succeed: many neighbours are displeased with the high-class newcomers in an area that thrives on its seedy reputation, and even the designers say they are taking a risk. http://www.news24.com/News24/World/N...255039,00.html http://news.theage.com.au/handbags-r...0120-1myj.html Stupid conservative government, in the end Amsterdam will be as bland as every other boring freakin' city ![]()

They won't they'll just try and polish it up. If they got better looking hookers in there great! The fat black corner by the church is awesome but I'd rather look.... at hot chicks.
For the Coffee Shops, as long as they don't sell to minors they'll be fine too. |

Speaking of the fat black hooker by the church. My wife and I were going to see the church (history and all that), and I glanced at her and she gave me this witch look, and the serpent tongue thing. I still get the shivers thinking about her.
I guess there's a man for every girl.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. They went back on their (intelligent) classification of psychadelic mushrooms as a soft drug, and the shops were following the rules the whole time. If I remember correctly, 'shrooms got hit because dumbass tourists would go to Amsterdam, buy shrooms, take them AND alchohol (seriously, wtf?) AGAINST the strong warnings of the shop owners, and then go walk off bridges and buildings and other ridiculous shit. Naturally, this was the shrooms, not alcohol. |

In Ft Lauderdale, the former Spring Break Capitol, it was the actions of the people who participated that brought on the wrath of the authorities. Diving off of buildings etc.
While I'm all for letting people have a good time, and I'm against legislating against most personal choices, but I fear that if tourists in Amsterdam don't understand that we have a unique place to enjoy herb in an open environment we may lose it. Follow the rules, don't smoke out in the streets, and act like responsible adults, and we should be able to enjoy the Dutch, their beautiful country, and their tolerance, for years to come.

If you would only go to smoke, you're right, you can find cheaper smoke "friendly" vacations (especially now since our dollar is more worthless by the day). But Holland, the country, the history, and the Dutch people equal a sum total much higher than a few cafes.

If you want a almost the same kind of environment as Amsterdam with cheaper shops that are pretty much just as good you can go to Rotterdam. It's about thirty minutes southwest and apparently just quieter and smaller, but still has some great shops. Most of the good independent growers who grew any quantity got screwed, but dutch and Belgian authorities in summer 2006, since then weed has been not as good and more expensive due to organized crime taking hold of it.
Anyways I've never being, but seeing as I'll be living in beligum next year I'm very excited to go. I did some research and if your ever in the area apparently the best shop to go to is The act, Westewagenstraat 80, Rotterdam. Here's a review http://www.coffeeshop.freeuk.com/Dat...hopsB/Act.html |
