400w Hps

I've got a 400W HPS marine lighting system, it's completely sealed with the ballast attached and is designed to be submergable. It gets pretty damn hot to the touch, but honestly doesn't produce 1/4 the heat as some of the other 400W ballasts I've seen. Anyways, my question, it came (used) with a LU400 bulb, link http://doityourself.com/store/6235360.htm --- Just wondering, how much better do you think a Hortilux 400W would be. I got the thing used, so the bulb might have unlimited hours used on it. It's not as bright as I've seen some other 400W bulbs. I guess I just answered my own question. I post the stupidest shit sometimes, lol. The bulb I have goes for $15'ish and our local hydro shop has an Hortilux for $70. I'm going to drop the $70 no matter what, just wondering, any opinions?

Agreed. I think that that hortilux bulb is one of the closest spectrums to sunlight that we can manufacture. I think it will be much better than that bulb you have, especially if you think it is not as bright as it could be. By the way, I have had a 400 watt HPS in use for about 3 years and it finally just burned out. That is about what can be expected for this type of bulb and is recommended to be replaced after 3 years regardless if bulb is burned out. I will consider replacing it with that hortilux bulb.

Its alot better man, Ive been using the 400 super hps, aka hortilux bulb for about a month and am noticing a differance . Atleast from what I was using, its a huge jump up with light and the growth rate is great with the new light, I've used a 70w hps a while back, the shps is so much more going towards the right end of the spectrum I want to be at, couldnt tell you what spectrum exactly but the color is alot less yellow imo and better for veg, but havnt actually had the oppurtinity to use it in flowering yet, another month or two, depending on how long I veg for, I cant wait to see the results I can get . Keep em happy.

Well, I have decided to order the Hortilux 400 watt HPS for my replacement bulb. It gives 55,000 lumens where my standard HPS (Philips) gave 50,000. I just bought it today for $65 out-the-door from www.insidesun.com

I picked one up yesterday from our local hydro shop for just under $75 after taxes, and hot damn it was worth it. Just by letting it warm up I saw a huge difference, I think the last bulb I had was way past its prime.

For referance plantlightinghydroponics.com is where I get all of my equipment from, I got the bulb for 49.99. It was a packaged deal , so I coudnt tell you all the price with shipping, but if you all are major cheapies like me, looking to save a few bucks here and there. They are very reliable and great customer service. The bulb works great too !! Along with the equiment. I dont work for them or anything, but am just happy with their services. Hoping to spread the goodness to a few other folks. !!
