take it or leave it, but i recently heard that the common idea about helping your plants by talking to them really isn't what people think it is. while this will indeed increase the available co2 for the plant, raising the concentration of co2 as such can alter the pressure gradient of the gas exchange enough to signal sufficient co2 to start photosynthesis. at this time, a hormone called abcisic acid (or ABA) passes through the leaves' guard cells (two cells comprising the leaf stomata). this causes the liquid cytosol to basically leave the guard cells, causing them to close together. the reason why you wouldn't want that is that you will have effectively triggered photosynthesis, and likely well before the plant has taken in all the energy it could have to make the sugars it needs to grow. could be a bit off as this is just from a moment's recollection, but you get the idea.
a bit of rambling i know, and as i said take it or leave it. but the guy i heard say that was my biology professor.
