Growing Advice Anyone?

Hello there!

Finally got some seeds to sprout! At first, i had the light (a 65watt plant growing bulb) hung about 3 inches above the plants, but they seemed to dry out and die : ( killed my seeds. Now I have the light hung about one foot from the plants and they seem to be good to go.

I have a ton of questions, and if anyone has any answers I'd be grateful!

Anyone know how high I should hang a 65watt bulb above my plants? Most of the light hanging guides seem to be for larger wattages. Also, how many plants would I be able to grow underneath it?

On a separate note, does anyone know of a good reference that explains topping or FIMing plants?

Some pics attached!

peace

Re: Growing Advice Anyone?

Is your light just a normal light you find in your house? It looks kinda like it and those don't work. You need a fluorescent, hps or metal halide bulb. I'd go with a flourescent and since they don't get hot you can have it like an inch from the plant. go to wally wurld and buy a compact fluorescent light bulb and put it in your lamp. get the brightest one you can find.

Re: Growing Advice Anyone?

Don't use a halogen. Just go buy a 5500k bulb and a 2700k (42 watt) bulb from home depot. Should be about 15 bucks

Yeah man, halogens dub as space heaters. Those fuckers are HOT! I would recommend at LEAST 100 true watts for seedlings. CFLs are no where near as efficient as HID so when you see people say 100 for the first plant and 50 each one beyond that, they are talking HID.

Re: Growing Advice Anyone?

Alright, so you all recommend CFLs (flourescents), right?

So, why both a 5500k AND a 2700k? And both at the same time, or for different parts of the life cycle? Also, can I put these in my lamp or will I have to buy and hang a fixture (are they tubes or bulbs?).

If I get these two bulbs, could I grow 2 plants to full size?

Ha, I'm such a beginner, sorry for all the ?s. But who gives a damn - this is kinda fun : )

Re: Growing Advice Anyone?

I hope this helps in some way...?

With florescents you would use the Blue 5500k (most likely 6000k,) bulbs for the Vegetative part of your grow,( 18/6), and then when you went into Blume /Bud cycle (12/12 hours), you would use the Red (most likely 2700k,) to flower.

I hope I got this right. I Just came home from pizza and beer and feel a little drunk

Good luck Bro.

P.S. Do yourself a BIG FAVOR and start reading heavy in the grow sections of Grass City.

Peace.

Re: Growing Advice Anyone?

6500K is on the blue end of the light spectrum. 2700K is on the red end of the light spectrum. Since plants are green, we know they reflect the green wavelength and absorb blue and red light.

In nature Cannabis is a seasonal plant, with early spring bringing the warmth that wakes up wet seeds in the soil. During the summer months the angle of the sun is more direct, and as such, the plants receive a greater amount of blue light. During the fall the Sun is at a different angle in the sky which limits the overal amount of blue light which penetrates the atmosphere. Evolutionarily speaking the plants have exploited this phenomenon by creating photosensative horomone reactions.

Just like in a teenager when the horomones kick in, only people are more "auto-flowering" after a specific period of time of living. Canabis Sativa and Indica rely on photosensitivity to change the horomone levels; when the spectrum is blue and the dark periods shorter than 12 hours the plant grows vegetatively. When the spectrum shifts to red and the dark period is 12 hours or greater then the indoor plant will begin producing it's maturing horomones.

By using the different spectrums in this way you help mimic nature and appease the thousands of years of genes in your plants. You should consider mixing spectrums to more closely mimic nature, a 2 to 1 ratio works very well. 100w blue, 50w red, and then 100w red and 50w blue (or whatever).

Steer clear of the tubes, they are alright for small seedlings and clones but don't really offer much penetration power and are difficult to mount right. CFL bulbs are easy to come by at hardware stores, and places like target and walmart. The easiest to find bulbs are the 27w Daylight nVision CFLs but you can also find 43w Soft White GE CFLs for the flowering process.

Clamp light reflectors to a very good job spreading the light and increasing yeild. You're going to need to keep the bulbs within 3" from the plants once they are established (serrated leaves), and when the plant is strong and healthy enough you'll want those bulbs as close as possible without burning. The low wattage results in a low amount of "penetration" power, allowing the number of lumens at 5" from the bulb to be effectively useless for growth. Surround the plant when it becomes taller and this should help the internodes develop very nice.

Expect more than you expect with these simple CFL bulbs. If I'd known I could grow weed with $20 in common household products I would have been doing it much earlier than I am now.

Re: Growing Advice Anyone?

i just wonder why?
any body would to grow my favorite plant like that.
i'll tell you,you might as well grow it in the oven.
i don't mean to be rude.someone got to set you straight.
this is a weed that grows everywhere. you just plant it,
water it and keep it warm, like 78 to 85,not bake it.
it's just a little tiny seed/a plant in a tiny package give it some light.
think sunlight or hid of cfl.
but never that man. poor thing
you need some comunity service for that
dasterly deed right there.
i suggest painting all the fire hydrants.
it's ok though cause we all fail. just like you
and i hope to hell your next grow goes better
peace man i'm just playin.you'll get the hang of it
or we gonna have some nice lookin hydrants down town.
hey just think if you had 50 bucks and 60 seeds you could grow you some weed everywheres or start to paintin.

Re: Growing Advice Anyone?

Well damn friends! This is the best forum I've ever posted on. I'll look at some CFL lights and a couple more lamps tomorrow. When I get them up I'll post a pic and we'll see if I can't grow some bud : ) I love the occasional smoke, but hate the buying process and hate even more paying so much for shitty ganja. Also nu-bube, I'll take advice from a drunk man at least 9 out of 10 times! the brew tends to illuminate. ha : )

Thanks!

Re: Growing Advice Anyone?

Well, here's the update.

Bought two 2 26-watt 6500k CFL's today, hung them about 4" away from the plants. I'm still traumatized from my seed-frying experience, so i'll move them closer gradually so I don't burn the plants. I don't have the cash for any more clamp reflectors at the time, but I'll look into it.

In a while I might try to invest in more lights, but I think I'll stick with this until the plants get a bit more sizable : )

let me know what you think.

peace
