Re: 1x 1000watt hps vs 3x400w hps

1 1000w is perfect for 4 by 4 area... you want 2 1000s for a 4 by 8 table. If its just stationary your best bet. You could get 3 400's to substitute each 1000, but you are allooking at a lot of wires and ballasts. Youd get good light distribution with 6 400's on a 4 by 8 foot table. I personally would go with 4 600's on a 4 by 8 table instead of using the 400's. I am using 2 1000's on both of my 4 by 8 tables with a good results.

As far as electricity, you are going to need to call an electrician. Go to craigslist and look up electrician- lots of them out of work. I got a guy to put in 100 amps into a room I was building and he even made me the whole electrical board. He did this for 150 dollars even + parts 30 dollars... really thrifty too.

when you get your shit wired, get way more amps than you think you'll ever need. Every 1000w is going to pull around 10 amps. you will only be able to get 1 1000w on a normal circuit. Get 50 amp circuits or somethign big because you don't want to use more than 75% of your circuits amps at a time. I have two 50 amp circuits and i have 2 lights 1 ac unit on one circuit and 2 lights and some random extras on the other.

Re: 1x 1000watt hps vs 3x400w hps

Thanks for the input Scat. However, I was just on a site that stated at 120v a 1000w hps ballast would only consume 9.6 amps and at 240v it would consume 4.5 amps. So that means, if I could get an extension cord that holds 2-3 sockets, I could probably have 2-3 lights plugged into the extension and the extension plugged into the outlet. In total, that would be 14-15 amps at 240v settings.

Your input welcome, thanks.

I don't know too much about electricity, but I run multiple 400 watters and I don't even plug those into the same outlet. You are going to need to run other things other than just the lights. There is no way I would plug two 1000 watters into an extension cord and plug that in, asking for trouble. how do you explain that electrical fire to rescue when they come to put it out?

Re: 1x 1000watt hps vs 3x400w hps

If I were to run anything more than what I have right now, I think I would be calling an electrician to beef up my shit. When you run watts like that you have a lot of heat and other things to think about, which lead to running a/c units, fans and blowers, etc. That stuff adds up to. You are not going to want to take any chances, especially when it comes to growing. If something were to happen, you would be absolutely fucked. Go find some good sized grows, using more than a thousand watts. I bet you most of them had an electrician wire their shit to handle all the power consumption.

First of all, if your run your circuits near max capacitiy you are going to be asking for a fire. Secondly, you are just going to trip the circuit everytime you try to plug in more than the circuit is going to allow. Remember though, a 1000 watt bulb is only really good for a 4 by 4 area so regardless your going to need more to run what you want. I tried to find different circuits using extentsion cords and even living in a 3000 sq ft house I constantly tripped the circuits. You can straight find a very cheap electrician from craigslist. My guy even made it clear he would trade his services for a little of the stuff grown under the lights. Your talking about a lot of power - and that equals a lot of heat. Unless your using aircooled lights, imho, you need about 10000btu of cooling power per every 2000w's being used. you may get away with using your house ac for only 1 table, but that is going to get expensive for just your room.
