Exclamation Our First Grow Journal

Hey guys just wanted to share me and my friends first grow with everyone. We just got back from home depot with a 55 gallon trash can, some reflective tape, lights, 8 inch fan and soil.

What we have done so far is completely cover the inside of the trashcan with the tape, and put the soil in. Were planning on just kind of hanging the lights (dangle if you will) down the sides of the container like so.

We have two 100 watt bulbs in those bad boys, dont know if thats enough? too much? was hoping yall could help us out. Also have the fan, how would yall incorporate that into this setup if this was yours. Should we cut a hole in the side or the top? Much help appreciated.

Our seeds are germinating in paper towels as we speak, will keep yall posted as our grow goes on Thanks guys

Re: Our First Grow Journal

Cool idea, havent ever seen someone use a trash can as a grow box. Thats definatly gonna keep it stealthy. But one problem you have is the lights your using arent 100 watts...they are 26 watts cfls. Your definatly gonna need more than 2 of those to take a plant thru veg and then even more for flowering. Id say if you can get say 6-8 of them in there (take the reflector off the light fixture and put some "Y" splitters in it) that would do for vegging. Good luck bro

Re: Our First Grow Journal

Also as for the fan id cut a hole maybe 6-7" above the soil and stick it in there, blowing in. Another thing you might want to think about is water drainage so excess water can come out of the soil.

Re: Our First Grow Journal

So what would you suggest for drainage? drill a few holes in the bottom or whats some ideas. Were also contemplating doing a 12/12 cycle so they dont grow as big seeing as we have limited space. Thoughts?

pop some holes in the lowest spots on the can, then fill with 2" of gravel. How many plants you trying to put in there? If you only want to do one I would recommend using a 3 gal container in the bottom instead of filling the can itself with soil.

Yeah man, holes in the bottom would do. Then put the can on something so it can catch the runoff.

As for cycle, i go 24/0 for first 2 weeks then go to 18/6 for remainder of veg. Going 12/12 from start is gonna severly stunt your yield. In my experiance if i start flowering a topped plant at about 6-8 inches, they almost always finished right around 2 feet tall.

Re: Our First Grow Journal

Well i have been doing some research on the 12/12 and like the idea of getting my yield asap seeing as me and my friend are very impatient ha. What would happen if we did the 24/0 for the first two weeks, then skipped the 18/6 going straight into flowering. Thanks so much again guys for the help.

edit: nutes and ferts about three weeks from seed. depending on your soil mix.
Go pick up a bag of Fox Farm Ocean Forest.

Mix

6 parts FFOF
2 parts Earth Worm Castings (any farm/agri. supply store)
3 parts perlite (bigger chunks are better)
1/4 tsp. dolomitic lime / gal of soil

This mix should give you a good month or so of nutrients for your plants then you gotta get on it.
Do you have access or want to go to a hydro shop?

FFOF = fox farm ocean forest. soil that is rich in goodies from the earth and sea.

I use a small cup. as long as you use the same size cup to measure each ingredient, that equals one part.

6 parts of FFOF = 6 cup fulls of soil
added to
2 parts of earth worm castings = 2 cups full
added to...
3 parts perlite = 3 cups full
1/4 teaspoon of dolomitic lime/ gal of soil or cubic foot of soil

all mixed up.

This is just a base soil. Soon(1-2 months) the fertilizers/nutes will be mainly washed out of this soil and you'll need to supplement with store bought nutes (ie: General Hydroponics 3 part liquid nutes , or what I use and swear by, Fox Farm's Grow Big, Big Bloom, and Tiger Bloom.) or the natural stuff (blood meal, bone meal, earth worm castings, etc.)
you can use horse/chicken poop too. It's high in nutrients our plants love.

I'd check any local nurseries or farm supply stores. FFOF will be the hardest thing to find. If you can't find it... check out ICMAG's message boards and search for "soil mix". There's a ton that are simple and effective. A lot of them are even able to be mixed up with products found at home de pot, loews, or wallyworld. The nutrients can be found online or in hydro stores. If you get lucky you can find them in local specialty shops.
