The stump on the right node is, indeed, some sex organ but it is too early to tell what it is (either a male pollen sac or a female calyx w/white pistils).
I'd agree though, the females present more of a 'cone' while the male sacs are stout in the beginning, sometimes. Don't rely heavily on that idea though.
