Re: Electricity usage, wiring, saftey, and YOU!

i'd like to hire an electrician to add an outlet to a closet. it's a small closet that doesn't really need a light or outlet, so that's what makes it suspicious. is there anything i should be worried about if i hire an electrician to do something weird (from the sheeple perspective)?

There's nothing weird about a light or a plug in a closet. Just tell the guy you want a light to see your stuff or you want to put a dehumidifier in there due to moisture buildup.
-battery charger
-computer gear
-motorized tie organizer
-etc.

Believe me, unless you've got pot posters and pipes all over the place, most don't want to know any details of your life. But most often they will ask what you plan to plug into it to make sure what they do will make it possible. Hope that helps.

How big is the closet, and honetly thats not even nessicary unless your doing it big. If not there are power strips and extension cords just always make sure you check the capacity of them unless you want your house to burn down. You could also learn how to do it your self at my work im about to have to wire a machine shop and i have no experiance in that at all and we have to wire 3 phase which is like 20 times more dangerous then the power we use so its alot more tricky but if im still alive in a week or 2 i can give you a complete run down on how to do it your self unless somone on here can help you further but good luck and grow safe

Re: Electricity usage, wiring, saftey, and YOU!

This would not be a hard thing to do yourself. Look on the other side of the wall. is there outlets on the other side????

An electrical company will charge you at least $100 an hour, usually with a 2 hour minimum. + the $15 worth of parts it would take.

Well, a typical space heater can draw 1500w, a Hi-Def TV 400+w, a hair dryer is almost 2000w. When you think about the power usage of everyday items, it can help put things in perspective. You'd need to be pulling around 5kw or 5,000w per hour for at least half the day to raise the eyebrows of a power company.

Not to mention, your power bill cannot be used to obtain a warrant (not in US anyway). It can be used to further incriminate you if you've already been caught. But a high power bill doesn't exactly send the power company running to the authorities screaming "Grow Room". If you pay your bill and have a clean place (devoid of growing evidence, smells, etc.) they're happy to sell you the KWH.

Also, most meters are read wirelessly, from a distance, so the meter reader never has to get very intimate with your grounds. Hope that helps.

Re: Electricity usage, wiring, saftey, and YOU!

Your post is awesome, it has given me alot of help on understanding the price of electricity and i was able to find out a rough estimate on how much my first grow is gonna run me.
Im growing in my attic using one outlet and a power strip which will have four outlets being used. Im using cfls and am starting with four 22 watts, two 30s and two 42s. I am wondering if this lighting setup is hazardous at all since it is all coming out of one outlet
