ah ok! The input defines what it plugs into. The wall outlet! That's 120 volt Alternating Current at a frequency of 60 hz. That's what we all have in our houses in the US. The output is what you are actually using. The DC stands for direct current. The 300 ma stands for miliamp. Think of it being compared to grams and miligrams. 1 amp is = 1000 miliamps. So, 300 miliamps is equal to 0.3 amps. So...,

12v x .3a = 3.6 watts.

i understand the conversions lol. but i assumed that's what i was using. i just wasnt sure when i heard you speaking of input. but now i know my grow cab fans use 3.6 watts each. +rep for helpfulness and sweet sticky bro. i was considering making one myself but you beat me to it

Re: Electricity usage, wiring, saftey, and YOU!

hey thanks for all the great info...

one more quick question:

say your running a 400W bulb with a 400W ballast. Does the ballast also draw 400 watts as well? So when the ballast and bulb are running, there will be 800 watts of usage?

No the 400 ballast IS the power for the bulb. However, the ballast will consume some wattage on its own so you have to read the info on the ballast to see what it truly uses. I wouldn't say it would be more than 30-40 watts...

Re: Electricity usage, wiring, saftey, and YOU!

Does anyone use a GFCI? I have one as the first device in my power control panel.

I also use a Kill-a-Watt to track usage.

People often ask, so how many Kwh does a 60 watt light bulb use per hour? It uses 60 watts per hour. That’s it. So in this case, we just do another simple formula and move the decimal place back.

60w /1000 = .06 Kwh.

Power companies charge by the Kwh, as I said above. Now, from looking at your bill, you can see how much you are charged per Kwh. The national average is 12 cents per Kwh.

so, 1000 watts= 1 kwh.
12 cents a kwh
1 kwh per hour
1.44 per 12 hour cycle if my math is on, please correct if wrong.
