What to use for res & net pots

Right now im using a 15 gallon? blue plastic tub I got at Walmart for the res, but it lets in a little light. For my net pots I bought a shallow longer clear plastic tub which I half-assed painted black, and still lets in a little light. Is this light going to cause stuff to grow in my water? Is there an additive I can use that won't harm my plants but will prevent algae and stuff from growing in my water? How would algae and such be bad for the plants? People water their plants with pond water which has a ton of algae, and I'm sure the soil doesnt completely filter all of it out. Oh, and btw this is for a drip system. Oh, and one more question. Right now I have small (1/4''?) hoses running to the base of my plants in the hydroton, but was wondering where I could get those metal drip ring things that go around the base of the plants to disperse the water out over the hydroton more.

Algae is bad for your reservoir, period. It almost sounds like your trying to convince yourself it's ok, it's not.

Use aluminum foil and completely wrap your entire reservoir in it. It'll make it completely light proof, no more algae.

i wouldn't use aluminum foil, but aluminum tape. easier to apply, looks better, works better, and won't cause hot spots.

or just paint it correctly in the first place.

like herbal said, any algae at all is bad. it WILL cause root rot, thereby killing your plants.

just take the 30-40 minutes to do it right and you will be ok.

Yeah man, aluminum foil tape, or non-corrosive pipe tape(it's black and kinda rubbery). Those work great for light proofing. Use net pots for net pots. Bite the bullet and send a money order to a hydro shop if you don't have one close.
