How Far Wawy Should I Put My Lights?

I have a 400w MH and HPS switchable lamp. I also have 3 guys just beginning their vegetative growth and a seedling that took 12 days to sprout two days to come up out of soil. probably less than an hour falling over and now 2 days with out any growth, its embryonic leaves haven't separated yet. So...HOW FAR AWAY SHOULD I PUT MY LIGHT? OR WHAT IS A GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR LIGHT PLACEMENT?

hrm 12 days to sprout is a bit long, but up to 14 isn't unheard of. however, if the embryonic leaves haven't separated that's a definite bad sign.

if your other 3 veg plants are doing ok, then it could just be a weak seed. do the 3 plants veg-ing have a nice deep green? if so then that's usually a good sign the light is fine.

other factors could be your lights are too far away, or you're under/over watering them.

what i do to tell the right distance of my light is place my hand on the top of the tallest plant and keep moving the light down until my hand starts to feel uncomfortable then i back it off a few inches. then i just make sure my fan is blowing across the canopy. no burning yet and i'm using a 1000w hps

Yeah thats what I have been doing I was just curious because I recently switched to my MH bulb. The baby is opened and inside are tiny little leaves that are its first non-embryonic leaves. I didn't notice this trait with any other of my sprouts and since it took 12 days to sprout too. I think its some weird strain. All my seeds were hand picked and sprouted from bags of good NW bud. And all are from different bags.
