space between lights and plants during flowering

i have hanging lights how much room should their be between the lights and the plants during flowering. my friend says 4-5 inches. i said about a foot. whats the right space between plants and lights

what Type Of Lights Do U Have.....what Is The watts?

if its CFL lighting then 2-3" is fine ,very little heat off cfls.
if hid would depend on the wattage but say 250 watt =6+", 400 watt = 8+", 1000 watt 10+, this is a very rough guestimate but be close
