The plants grow 8 inches in 2 days? I had that kind of stretching problem only when I used an incandescent as a teen with a bagseed. What kind of light?

It could be natural. My only suggestion would be to get a little bit of blue spectrum (MH, CFL, fluoro tubes) in there. I'm told it reduces plant's tendancy to stretch. Luckily you won't have to worry much longer. By 3rd week of flowering, vertical growth should be almost restricted to the buds.

That is a healthy growth rate 8" in 2 days

Plants could be stretching between internodes cause there getting too much yellow light(from your hps) and not enough blue light(metal halide), or maybe your plants are crowded too closely together and are receiving too little light. You should change lights from HPS to metal halide, which would provide more blue light and reduce that stretching.

its one of the 2 or both.so make sure spacing is fine between plants & put that mh light in & it'll be fine.
then as your into 2 weeks since you flicked switch to 12/12 ,leave mh in & replace with hps when stops stretching as it'll soon be budding up,if not allready doing so.....if is budding up i would just leave hps in as it'll stop stretching & concentrate on budding up.

that has been your problem , church strain is a cross of indica/sativa(flowers in 9-10 weeks) & should not grow high wide & handsome so quickly under a 600 watt light, especially with light 8" away.

all the best M.

Although i'm no expert, being @ my first grow atm, i'd say it's the genetics, because i've been using a 400 watt HPS through veg and flo, also my box is extremely crowded, still after 5 weeks veg and 5 weeks flo they are no more than 80cm tall, except one WW that went beyond 1 meter, and they've stopped growing.

That's insane, do you know the strain? if not it could be a sativa dominant strain and they're known to blow up real quick.

if your strain is a real stretcher, you could use a MH bulb for the first 2-3 weeks (stretch period) of 12/12. this will keep the node spacing closer thus less height. switch to hps once the buds start to form and stretching has stalled about 3 weeks in.

regards,
linedrivr

I was curious about something along these lines... I vegged with CFL's. During the transition period between veg and flower it would have been handy to have left my almost done buds those two weeks or so (I had a deadline). Would my fresh crop have suffered any yield loss had I done so (ie. changed from adequate CFL's to HPS after a few weeks of 12/12 instead of HPS immediately). I figure that the intense light doesn't really make a huge diff for that period. How does that sound?
