I read somewhere that plants can grow roots from pretty much anywhere, esp if grown in very high humidity, maybe that's what it is. I hope it's not though, and that your original hunch is correct cos that'd be mental!

to me it looks like your plant got damaged and is growing little tap roots out of the damged are not un common

this deeply pains me, but the seedling is dead. it was killed by my neighbors in an overzealous application of weed killer too close to my yard. it stopped all growth until it eventualy turned completely yellow and died. however, it did have visible trichomes, whether you believe it was really flowering or not, i guess we may never truly know..
