Ventilation and odor questions

I've currently got a closet grow going and have to setup some sort of ventilation system to eliminate the smell. The closet already currently has a 4" dryer exhaust line running out to the roof of the 2 story building I live in. My current lighting setup is two 250w HPS lights.

The closet is roughly 8x5x9. I was considering buying http://www.htgsupply.com/viewproduct...roductID=52557. My question is do I need any sort of smell remover set up? I am going to be venting out the roof of the building and I was wondering if 5 white widow plants are really going to generate enough of a smell that it will be noticeable outside.

If something is required what are peoples opinions and thoughts on o-zone generators?

if you are asking if the neighbours would smell your plants from the exhaust out the roof likely no if you are asking if you will have smell in the house where you are growing yes!!!!

is the air being pumped into the attic, or are you running your exhaust line through the attic to a roof vent or soffit vent? i would have to think that if you're pumping all of that air into the attic than it will stink it up really bad, and what if your super or someone else has to go up in the attic for something? how big is the building you live in? apartment or condo?

There is no attic, it is a two story townhouse pretty much with 3 apartments in it. What I was mainly asking about is whether neighbors would smell it if I were to vent it out the roof of the building. It does vent to the outside and not into any attic space (as there is none). I was just trying to gather opinions on whether it is vital to buy the carbon filter or not. Cash is sort of an issue so if its not vital I would rather do without it. As long as it won't smell from street level there is no real concern.

A carbon filter in my opinion is real important, especially if you value your freedom. That is how most people get busted. A carbon filter is probably the best investment you can make.
check these guys out http://stores.ebay.com/FOOTHILL-FILTERS real reasonable.
Good Growing

So does anyone else have an opinion on the matter? I should be fine smell-wise right?

Carbon air filters work, so do ozone generators. I have a ozone generator mounted inside of my carbon air filter. you can get different sizes. i shopped for mine to fit the box i made. there are other things that you can get...these work best.
however, if you are in a small apartment, and you can smell it in the room that your front door is in, then most likely you can smell it in other places. also if it is a house that had been modified into apartments, then have to worry about a connected ventalation system. If the closet is closed and the exhaust leads directly outside, then just get the ozone for if the smell leaves the closet.

I'm not worried about the people in my building, we're all college kids. This is all taking place in a closet that has a air duct which leads directly to the outside (through the roof) and there is no central ventilation system, its a pretty oldish place.

How exactly do the ozone generators work? I'm just nervous because I have read posts on here about how it can be detrimental to the plants.

For example, if I were to buy this http://www.htgsupply.com/viewproduct...roductID=53129 for my room where would I have to position it and how exactly would it work? I haven't been able to find much information regarding them and I am really interested in your current setup.

I'm in a similar situation with my grow. I live in a ~90 year old apartment building with all other college students and had been having some issues with ventilation/odor until recently.

I actually had to make a small hole in my wall to connect a bathroom exhaust fan for my first grow. The hole goes into this bizarre utility shaft that runs up and down the middle of the building, and I'm pretty sure it connects to the roof.

However, with my new hydro setup things are getting a lot stinkier. I just bought a 6" Vortex inline fan off ebay for super cheap and have that running through a carbon filter. Takes care of the odor issues, because of the negative pressure in my closet I don't get any odor outside in the rest of my apartment unless I open the door.

So definitely go with an overpowered inline fan, better too much power than too little. As far as countering odor, it depends on a few things. If you have space to spare in the closet, a carbon scrubber on the intake of the exhaust would be simple. If you're confident that no exhaust could come back into the grow room and you're absolutely sure that the vent goes outside, ozone would be good if you didn't mind the extra expense. However, ozone has a very particular smell and if it didn't vent completely outside, would alert anyone who smelt it that something was up. Ozone is also very harmful to plants and even people if you breath enough of it.

I've never personally used ozone either, so I'd have to recommend the carbon scrubber. Just make sure the humidity doesn't get too high or it won't absorb odors.

you could also go with a masking agent. ONA is pretty darn good.

ONA, Ozium, and other stuff like that neutralizes odors instead of just masking them. I used ONA for my first grow but like I said, with my new (current) hydro grow things just got too stanky. I used as much ONA in four weeks of veg growth than I did during my entire last grow. That sort of stuff only goes so far, I'd just go with a carbon scrubber and not have to worry about anything.

Thanks for all the help, I guess I'm going to have to eventually give in and spend the money on a carbon filter. Anyone have a cheap place to get a 4" one?

Btw having incredible luck with my babies, 6 out of 9 turned out to be ladies! Two of which are "purple evolution" which should be pretty cool to watch. I'll try and get some pics up when they're further into flowering.
