Talking Dry Fertilizer question

I have a large industrial size bag of 10-10-10 dry fertilizer sitting in my room. I have 8 plants growing under two 48" fluorescents inside of six large party cups(I want them small) and two half-gallon pots. My plants are about two weeks old and soon I will be using the fertilizer. My question is not when I should start, but how much should I put on the top layer of the dirt, and how often should I use it? I need as specific as possible. I really appreciate it.

Dry ferts are to be mixed into the soil prior to planting. They need time to break down for the plant to use.

If you just sprinkle it on the top, chances are your plant won't be using it any time soon, and that's if it doesn't burn it.

Get some liquid nutes.

what the previous poster said.

Mix it into the soil you will use to fill the pot you plan to transplant the seedling into and let it mellow. The amount you use really depends on the amount of soil and the size of the pot.

From Cornell U:
<center> <table cellpadding="5"> <caption>Recommended post-plant complete fertilization rates for containerized nursery stock.</caption> <tbody><tr><th align="left">Fertilizer
material</th> <th align="left">lbs./100 sq. ft.y</th> <th align="left">lbs./acrey</th> <th align="left">tsp./gallon containerx</th> </tr> <tr><td colspan="4"><hr></td></tr> <tr><td>16-4-8</td><td>1.0-1.8</td><td>418-782</td><td>0.25-0.56</td></tr> <tr><td>12-6-8</td><td>1.3-2.4</td><td>556-1044</td><td>0.25-0.56</td></tr> <tr><td>Actual N</td><td>0.16-0.29</td><td>67-125</td><td>0.037-0.062</td></tr> <tr><td colspan="4"><hr></td></tr> </tbody></table> </center> xApplication to separate containers; 1 tsp. = 0.01 lb. or 0.16 oz.

Depends on the fertilizer. Actually, ferts for indoor household plants are to be mixed in with waterings, not into the soil.

Being a big "industrial size" bag leads me to believe this is an outdoor fert, so frankly I would not use it. We need to know more about it than its NPK. If you want to use cheap chemical fert just go to Home Depot or Wally World and get some general purpose indoor plant food for a couple of bucks.

I respectfully disagree. Granular fertilizer (agricultural versus horticultural) is NOT intended to be dissolved and applied while watering, as will be evident when you try to dissolve it.

You may be referencing those dry fertilizers such as Miracle Grow, or Peters. Those are crystalline fertilizer, not granular.

The OP (I believe) is asking for application instructions for that stuff that is broadcast (Scotts turf builder kind of fert.) or spread along row crops. There's nothing wrong with using what he has. Except for possible build-up in the soil, the plants can't tell if the nitrogen came from bat shit or ammonia. Likewise for P & K.

We're saying the same thing. What you quoted me saying is: "ferts for indoor household plants are to be mixed in with waterings". Those are the crystalline ones like MG and Peters and such, yeah, which are designed for mixing in with the water.

The OP never distinguished what type he has, though I agree it sounds like an outdoor fert for broadcasting. And those you do mix into the soil or spread on top, which is why I started by saying "Depends on the fertilizer".

Where we disagree is on whether or not he can use an outdoor granular fert designed for broadcasting for growing MJ indoors in party cups. I say no -- or rather, it's possible, but that's not what it's designed for so for a coupla bucks he should just go buy something designed for an indoor grow.

You did, since it only takes like a half teaspoon full per gallon pot, you should have plenty for quite a while. you could also fertilize your lawn.
