i don't know much about seedlings, i have only started from seed a couple times. i like clones personally.

coco, probably not at walmart, then again i hate walmart, so i don't know what they carry. do you have any indoor gardening stores around you?

I'm really glad that you opened this thread man. I've seen something labelled "Cocopeat" in a big store (kinda like walmart) at the gardening section. Is this the same thing as the one you refer as "coco"?

I don't know how "coco" or the thing I've seen looks like, couldn't see inside of the packing, but I thought it was something like Hydro material before. I've read the package and the thing has almost the same stuff inside like the soil I was using. Nitrate, Magnesium and stuff. So my real question is: Is coco a substitute for soil, not something like hydroton?

thanks

if that stuff you were looking at had the mag., nitrate, and other things then it's not the same coco as the stuff i'm talking about. because coco coir is inert and doesn't have anything in it like that.

as for it being a substrate for soil, yes coco was initially made for soil additives mostly for water retention. but it is also kind of like hydroton, rockwool, expanded clay, etc.. because if you think about it, when your using coco you are always suspending the root ball is a nutrient rich solution, just like any other hydroponic medium.

coco is considered hydro, because coco is inert, has no nutrients. so you have to always add your own nutrients and keep it moist at all times. so it's basically the same as using, say, rock wool. and yes all the plants i have grown in coco have grown way faster than soil. you can also use organic nutrients to keep everything organic too.

i'm off to work, so i will gladly answer any other questions a little later tonight!

he just answered the first question in the post above yours... and i would say that yes, versus soil, it does speedup/excite the growing process pretty damn well. my next grow will be down using coco; so hopefully it will turn out close to where he is at with his...his thread is very intriguing, no?

let me get this straight, you just wanting to use pure coco as the medium right? like i am? than yes, just fill it up just like you would with soil. personally i don't fill the container to the very top. i leave some room so when i water it, it doesn't just fall off the sides, ya know? and i also add some perlite in the mix, but it's not necessary.

i'd suppose that is the best way for using coco coir, using pure coco coir, no? what other mixtures of coco/soil do people use?

joxter can you take a picture of inside the buckets for me? at first i thought you were using a block and the water just covered it up to a certain point on the plant. so i guess i am a little confused...it sounds like here you are using it like soil, so its not in a block form? or just point me to a product on the net similiar to yours.... thanx bud.

i am using it exactly like you would use soil. the only difference is the Ph, and amount of nutrient solution you give it. i Ph at about 5.7 with a nutrient solution ppm of about 900 to 1100, and water twice a day.

it does come in brick form, but you take that brick and soak it in water to let it expand. then you use it just like soil, nothing fancy.

thats why i love it, it is sooo simple to use but gives fantastic results, because it's pretty much hydro.

you can mix coco with pretty much anything, i use a coco perlite mix. you can mix coco in with your favorite soil to better the water holding capacity if that soil drains too fast, coco is used for a lot of stuff. but if used by it's self it is hydro, and gives hydro results. once you mix it with soil then it's not hydro any more, it's just another additive to your soil mix.

quick little update for you guys.

heres the
purple shaman after i took some clones off it.

heres the super silver haze

heres the sour diesel after i took some clones off it.

and the God bud

i gave away the clones i had in soil, so i can't compare them to these anymore, but they are still a hell of a lot smaller and not very good lower branch growth either.

no prep at all really, just get some good coco, rinse it with Ph'd water (~5.7). and if you hand water all you need to do is make a batch of nutrient solution. no pumps, hoses, electrical components to mess with. its just as simple as growing in soil.
You use ph adjusted water at 6.7? But you said earlier that you rinse with 5.7? Which is the proper ph? This seems quite interesting, might try to find some coco coir.

Something like this? http://www.discountgarden.com/index....w=true&id=6599
