My male and female theory

Hello fellow growers..
I have developed this theory although it probably isn't true but this is how it occured for me. It only takes one male to pollinate a whole bunch of females not many males. Therefore if there is a plant whose sex is not determined and is with only females, chances are it will probably be a male due to natures course of reproduction.
This happened to me as my first plant was a male but I kept it in there hoping hairs would pop out and that it wasn't a male. Some females started to show up. After I got rid of the male, and unsexed cali-o became a male. leaving me with seven plants. 6 of them were clearly females and one was not yet determined. Later on it turned out to be a male. So from this I concluded that there will always be one male unless feminized.
Therefore I believe that if a plant is not sexed and there is no males, you are gonna get one. but this is my first time growing.. so i will see in the future if this reoccurs..
has this happened to anybody else by any chance?? whenever the male leaves a new one appears?

well ya got a few things right! first of all growing from seed its a 50/50 chance your gonna get a female or a male, no more no less. secondly its strain dependent when the plant decides to show sex after switching to 12/12, not necc. gender specific. Next, yes it only takes one male to pollinate a whole room! What you can do to sex properly is.. while in veg, say day 11, take a cutting from each plant and root them fast! 3-4 days, then, sex the rooted clones in a seperate chamber, low wattage of course.. then youll know what the mothers are! hope this helped.. feel free to ask anything your confused about

Dude, I dig your theory and, at first, just thought it sounded wrong... but then I thought about it a bit...

I mean, really, maybe just cuz you got a male among females, then another male among only females, and so on... I thought, maybe it's just bad luck and you're just getting superstitious. It would take more than 2 or 3 instances to see a pattern, any less could just be coincidence.

But it could happen. Plants DO actually communicate with each other. Elm trees have been known to release a pheremone when attacked by insects, in order to alert nearby elm trees to increase their resistances. Also, most fruits release a gaseous hormone that triggers nearby fruits to ripen faster, so they all hit peak ripeness around the same time... hence the origin of the expression "one bad apple can spoil the bunch."

So maybe, just maybe, among cannabis, the scent of a female (or, in your case, the scent of a whole harem of females) triggers a young plant to strap on a pair of balls.

That said, would the smell of a male trigger a young plant to go female? If so, somebody could develop a male plant cologne to make whole gardens turn female... Somebody could get RICH off that.

Meh... probably just a coincidence. Cool theory, though.

the whole thing about the seed's sex is a mystery... nobody knows if it's determined before or after you plant it.

some say the seed is male or female while it's still a seed, before you plant it

some say the sex is determined by environmental conditions, more stress causes more males

i dont think either 1 is proven, it's not fair to say 1 is the truth... nobody knows.

and it only takes 1 male to polinate all those plants yes. outside, 1 male plant can polinate for MILES, the wind blows the polin, same with inside, ur fan blows that shit everywhere and it sticks to ur sticky buds!

usually u can look at preflowers and get the males out of there before they polinate though...

the most recent reports i have read say that it is basically a battle between 2 hormones within the seed and which ever hormone gains dominance within that seed determines whether its sprouts as a male or female ...... and yeah a 50/50 chance ....

forgot to add ..... thats why seed companys soak their seeds with female hormones to give the seeds a better fighting chance of sprouting as females

Last edited by frog-godbee; 03-19-2007 at 11:11 AM. Reason: cuz i spelt companys wrong

High gook and flark! Flark, I just dont believe that to be true. I once treated 6 plants very badly for a week during veg. I was in the middle of build a new hydro system that was taking longer than id planned. So anyway, when I switched them to flower...BAM all six were male. Maybe freek luck -maybe not. But then on a second run of diff seeds/strain I had everything perfect (temps, humidity, fresh air,..ect) and 3 out of 3 were female.
I definately support the enviromental theory over the 50/50 chance, thru my own expeirences. Peace, TBug
