TDS meter

I'm sure this a stupid newbie question but here it goes - I am setting up my grow box for my first grow. I'm going to be growing in soil, probably 5 gallon buckets. I've read up on soils, ferts, nutes and the such. I am going inexpensive (aka cheap) on this first grow. I've got ph strips but I'm wondering if it's imperative to have a TDS meter in a soil grow. Thanks, guys.
