Found this article about lights. http://www.popularmechanics.com/home...t/4215199.html

it is all about fluoro's and compares a few brands. Home depot's (made in the usa) bulbs are on the top of the list.

Bought a set of CFL

When I read this thread I realized it was for me as I am on very tight budget.
I got me a 25 Watt Daylight 6500k says luminous 1600 ($9.98) I was almost blinded by this little guy
and a 40W Soft White says lumens 2600 ($7.98)
Made by Sylvania
I was able to purchase at a Lowes (Home Depot copycats)
My Walmart didn't have anythign close.
I litterly stood there for an hour looking at the lights. I couldn't find anything bigger . Scince I have a very small grow room, these may suffice.
I went and got lost looking for more supplys for my grow room setup and went back to the lights a few times
I found a ($12) Desk lamp, wish I can menouver very easily.

I found that the 7 dollar clamp on lamp (Walmart) works good for me. Be sure and take off the reflectors. I finally removed mine just a couple of days ago and the plant seems to like it more. There is more light from a side view than from the end. If only it had a side reflector.

true that

Yeah, from what I had been reading, when I was studying up, I realize found out that bulb produces lightgood from all its sides,
With the side being the most space, I made sure I could remove the refletor.
I am going to return this one for the clip on version at Lowes. I ran out of floor space, when I transfersd plants into new pots. I saw a 43 watt 2700 at Walmart, So I am gonna exchange my 40 watt 2600 sometime.

I am trying to figure out how the hell (in a 10"x18.75"x23.5" Micro Grow setup.) to cool down the air the bulb heats up. With my MicroGro's door shut the temp gets to 90/91 degreesF and drys my plants right out.
If I open it it drops to about 86/87 degreesF in there. I have two 6" fans blowing on the light so far from Walmart.
I have a 1/3" gap in the bottom at the back, and a 1" gap at the top
Dam my room(that I live in) is 86 degrees

I've heard People talking bought coolers for certain lights, do they make some kindo of cooler for CFLS?

Put CFL's 3 inches from the top of the plants.

Question...

Hello guys I couldn't help but stumble upon this thread with a few questions I have.
I recently moved in to a cramped studio apartment for college and my closet isn't big enough for my 1000w lamps etc.
How much do 40w CFL's typically run at Lowe's? I saw some today at the grocery store and the other day at lowe's but didn't pay enough attention to remember the price.
Also as far as lamps go do you guys just buy normal lamps at the store?
I've got a few lamps with the (stretchy wire neck) if that's what you call it.
I've got 20+ plants I started about 2 weeks ago outdoors but for some of my indoor strains CFL's look like the only promising way to get a crop due to my situation.

Weedman90.OG 01, you can get nice 6500 k bulbs at the stores from about $5.95 to $10.00 or so. I just use the stretchy neck lamps as well but, I think you could also go to Depot and get those hanging ballasts pretty cheap too.

Thanks for the reply VTEC.
I don't remember what I paid for my stretchy type lamp.
Do you know what you paid for yours? I need a few more.
If I were to grow 4 plants in a 4 x 5 how many bulbs would you reccomend?
Also say I had 10 CFL's should I do it like 5 daytimes and 5 soft whites?

No problem man.
I don't know what I paid for my lamps because I borrowed them from my mom However, I think desk lamps go for around $20 to $40 or so. Again, try for those ballast things; you might be able to get more for cheaper. For 4 plants at 50 watts per plant, you would need 200 watts of cfl's. However, if you want to light a 4x5 foot room that, would probably take closer to 600 watts or so. You can mix a 50/50 daylight to soft white ratio throughout the grow or use 75/25 daylight to soft light during veg and go 75/25 soft to day during flower.

Cool but, I would get setup BEFORE the beans germinate. You don't want them poking through the soil and THEN getting them light. Get things squared away BEFORE germinating and they will have a better chance of surviving.
