hy·dro·pon·ics (hº”dr-p¼n“¹ks) n. (used with a sing. verb). Cultivation of plants in nutrient solution rather than in soil. --hydro·ponic adj.--hydro·poni·cal·ly adv.--hydro·poni·cist (-¹-s¹st) or hydro·ponist (hº”dr-p¼n“¹st, hº-dr¼p“…-h¹st) n.

Sorry, not trying to be a smart-ass. But that sums it up. Mixing air and nutrients gives the roots everything it needs to thrive. No need to spend energy overcoming the friction of the soil on the roots. It seems to work well.

Hey man, quick question...

I'm looking at 6 buckets on a 30 gallon res (that sounds good, no?) - With that said, does my water pump in the controller STAY ON circulating the nutes 24hrs... or can I get away with an on/off pattern?

Also, when adding nutes, I just walk over to the res while the water pump is off, drop in nutrients / addback, then turn the water pump on for a few minutes so the entire system mixes, THEN take my measurements... Correct?

This question is well past my expertise. If I gave an answer it would be a guess and not a real good one. Here is a link to a system just like the one your planning. It will have all the info you need.

Funny you say that, I modeled my system based on his setup and yours. Good call!

I'll drop my questions in that thread

Do you think those questions are valid, though? Maybe I'm too and dwelling on things.

Just talking about this makes me so F'n green with envy. I wish I could build one of them trick systems. I just don't have the place to make one. I can't get over how cool that whole setup is.

Your questions seem like good ones to me.

Hey, we all have nothing but time...

Hopefully one of these days in a different situation you can make something that really flexes your creativity (once you can use up some more real estate for the garden)...

Anyways, I've been crossing my fingers from the beginning that this setup of mine will produce 6 little girls that look like yours I have Nirvana White Widow & Northern Lights - What's your opinion on those genetics, waht do you think I should I pop?

I've been looking at your tutorial ever since I started designing my first 'real' system.. The symmetry of everything in your garden; I really get a kick out of the attention to detail you use on something pretty much only your own eyes see...

I have to give you props for definitely running one of the threads I've really paid attention to.

Ocitown, I agree. The only thing is it looks like a bitch to clean. I am so lazy, if I did 12 plants it would have be flood tables.

Very true, but with the right conditions and harvest some may just call the bulk of the system.....Disposable!!

This may be a silly question but how does something grow via a hydroponic system? I know that it eliminates soil and directly attends to the roots with water/nutes but how do you grow a seed into that system?

All I can see are those clay tablets and the plant's roots. How do you get to that point? Do you grow the seeds in soil then transfer plant and roots together over to this system?

Most of us use rooted clones (a cutting) in our hydro systems. But if you have to start with seed, you will need to buy some 1" rockwool cubes. They are like cotton and hold moisture without molding or rotting (most of the time). Soak in pure water, insert seed or sprout into the cube. Set it in a tray and keep moist. When you see roots comming out of the cube, you are ready to install your plant into your hydro system. It will be fun, try it.
