Ummm.... It bubbles. The air line goes from the air pump to the air stone.

ok, so hydro is the next logical step for me (to speed up turnover). my question is how loud are these bubble buckets? enough to keep you awake?

The air pump can be noisy if its not set up right. If air lines aren't tight fitting and have leaks you will hear it. If the air pump is resting against the wall or wood you will hear it rattle. If the air pump is set up properly and resting on its rubber feet than you cant hear shit.

A few other changes i would make.
First: use a 5 gallon bucket. The more water the better. Its a balance between cost of additional ferts and neuts and maintaining a stable ppm and pH. as the water evaporates it concentrates the ppm and the pH responds accordingly. For example my largest plant will easly transpire and evaporate 1 gallon of water in a day. Right now she is in a 2 gallon bucket, so the result is that i have to add water every day and the concentrations fluctuate alot. Right now i can stay on top of it but that means i have to tend to my garden every day.

Second: I placed the air lines in the back of the bucket out of the way. Its neat and tidy, however my plants have overgrown and obscured the air lines. Last night i noticed one bucket was not bubbling as much as it should. Well low and behold one of the air lines was kinked. The lines soften up in the warm temps of the grow room so they are more susceptible to kinking. Now i would put the lines where they are visible for regular inspection.

I am also in the process of linking all my buckets with 1in tubing connected to the bottom of the buckets. This will allow me to install an auto top off controller and pump to keep the water level constant. I will also be able to drain all the buckets at once so maintenance will be a little more convenient.

Man would you mind explaining how this works exactly? I'm looking for everything i would need for 1-2 buckets. I'm confused about how this works. Do i need 2 buckets for the plants, then a seperate one for a solution? or are the 2 plant buckets self sustaining but I would need to add water/nutes? Any help you can give is much appreciated.

Update

I switched over to 5 gal buckets about 2 weeks ago. I used bulkhead fittings or through fittings and 3/4in tubing to connect the buckets. I love it. I wish i had some good pics. Ill be setting up a sick system for my next cycle. ill use 4-5 gal interconnected buckets and 1-4'x2' sheet of egg crate. I will then be able to tie the plants down better. By having 4 plants tied to 1 big sheet of egg crate i will be able to tie the plants across each other. Now that the buckets are all connected i dont have to be able to get to the buckets for maintenance. Im going to create a perfect 4'x2' vine of herb. Check out my MaxLST thread in the Advanced forum for more pics and details.

PS i have harvested one plant. She yielded 86.6 grams dry, but not cured so im guessing ill bull about 65 to 70 grams a plant! So if i have 4 plants thats about 250 grams. Im using a 430w T5 so thats better than 1/2 a gram per watt. or 31 grams per square foot!
