extension cord wiring???????

Basically I have to pass an extension cord through a wall ,Im trying to keep the hole small. So I was wondering if I could cut the cord then pass it through the wall. Reconnect the +/- wires and tape it up?

while building my grow room I just drilled a hole big enough to fit through without stripping the wire and then taped it up to block light with electrical tape.

It would just be better to leave the wires intact, no need to make it that dangerous and you could always seal the whole later on if you need to.

That would be a hell of a fire hazard and probably be a big hotspot, but you can make your own cord with removable ends very easily. I do that all the time because most of the skinny crappy cords are a hazard in themself. Any hardware store has the items and if its a grow you can make them fairly water resistant. If you have to do that solder them use wire nuts and tape. I suggest you just cut a hole big enuf and use a surge protector but Im no electrician.

NO. Do not tape up mains wiring - it is an unprofessional bodge that only a fool would do.

Either take the plug off and put that plug back or cut the plug off and put a replacement on (if it is originally fitted with a moulded plug), or buy a proper wire connector. Either way the price is CENTS - way cheaper than a house fire.

another option

Another option is to cut the end off the extension cord like you said and then also cut the end off the lights cord as well. Then run your cords into a 4"X4" electrical box.(use romex connectors to protect your wires from rubbing on the boxes edges) Then wire nut and tape all of your splices and then but a blank cover on the box. You can wire all your lights into one box and then have just one cord to plug into your outlet.

Here are some pics of what i did. Mine is a little different then yours because I hang my light directly from the box. I should also mention the I am an union electrician so I got my box and connectors from work but you can get them at any home improvement store. Also when you do yours stripe the cords insulation back a good 6" so you have plenty of free conductors to work with.(you can see that I left mine short and it made it harder to hook up) Then strip each wires insulation back about 3/4"-1".
