Question Box is ready – seeds are germinated – cooling fan not working!

By grow box is finally built, my seeds are geminated – I went to test out everything last night before planting the seeds this morning – found out the computer fan that I am using for cooling the Halide bulb is not working. I need some help!
<o =""></o>
The fan is a 12 V computer fan – has 3 wires, and from other research, I believe the wires are:
Black: Ground
Red: 5 V
Yellow: 12 V
<o =""></o>
From what I understand, I don’t connect the red wire – just the Black and Yellow. I bought a Radio Shack 12 VDC adaptor (output is 12 VDC, 1500 mA). I do not have a multi-meter, so I am not sure which is positive and which is ground (there is two wires, one black, one black with a white strip).
<o =""></o>
I tried connecting the Black on the adaptor to the black on the fan, black w/ white strip to Yellow wire on the fan – nothing. I reversed it – still nothing.

I tested the fan out in my computer – the fan works. I did have another fan – I tried connecting the red wire, and the fan smoked – so I think that one is dead.
<o =""></o>
Do I have to get a second power adaptor for the 5 V? What do I need to do to make this work?
<o =""></o>
My seeds are ready to go in, but I found that without a fan, the internal temperature of the grow chamber is 106 degrees! I need help. Anyone – PLEASE?
<o =""></o>
Thanks,
David

I did some googling and found that the yellow is 12 V from the computer POWER SUPPLY, but it is the TACH on the computer fan. From my new understanding, you put 12 V DC to the RED wire on the fan.

However, from my testing, I had put 12 V to the yellow TACH wire on the fan - and I believe I burnt out yet another fan. Back to radio shack !

Can anyone confirm that I connect 12 V DC to the RED fan wire before I connect up the new fan that I am going out right now to buy?

Thanks again,
David

I just went back to Radio Shack - $17.99 for a 12 V DC fan there - WOW. But I then noticed that they have a 120 V AC fan for $19.99 - same size (80 x 80 x 25 mm) - pushing 36 CFM of air.

I went with that - easy to get an extension card, cut off the end, connect it, and it is all working! Now I can take the 12 V power adapter that I just bought back.

All in all, it is cheaper just going for the 120 VAC fan.

Sorry I couldn't offer any advice. I wanted to avoid what you just went through so I just picked up a squirrel cage fan :/ No problems, but a little too much power!
