I've developed a fascination with growing.my.own food. But so far it seems like just tomatoes veggies salads and stuff like that. In order to actually survive on home grown food you need some staples.

So my question is this. Does anyone here have experience with growing their own wheat/rice? Does it take a lot.of room? Is it practicle to try to grow your own staple food in a small city backyard?

I'm going to give it a try myself.of coarse so any tips from the pros would be aporeciated

wheat is simple to grow man i grow it myself, i also grow it in between my other vegetables as a living ground cover and rice aint too much harder if youre in the proper climate for it, have you seen:

if you want staple foods potatoes are great for that, easy to grow, and last for long periods of time in a cold room. its also a lot less of a hassle harvesting potatoes.

also remember that potatoes can be eaten in a lot more ways than wheat. from all the stuff like baked and boiled potatoes to potato flour you can use for breads.

if you cant go potatoes and dont want to do wheat, or rice there is also always corn.

just make sure to get both sweet corn or maize varieties.

(where i live it gets extremely cold, and we have short and extremely hot summers.. best of both worlds lol, anyways bear that in mind.) Are you looking to grow food to keep you going throughout the winter, or just looking to cut costs?

im growing my garden to help reduce the cost of foods for my family, and hopefully i will have enough beets/turnips/carrots/corn to last me the winter, but this is a bad year for carrots and corn has been pretty hit and miss.

its cool to see more people getting into growing their own food. its something that ive wanted to promote around my area for a while now.

Rice is extremely labor intensive to grow so I doubt you want to get yourself into that. Wheat, corn or potatoes are much easier.
