Best FPS video games

I was arguing with my buddies tonight over the best FPS.

Think about it not only in terms of graphics and smooth playability, but how it compared to others like it at the time, and if it brought forward any new innovations.

Doom - SNES, Genesis, PC
Classic shoot em up FPS. Blow em up with your pistol, hack em with a chainsaw, dodge fireballs, and obliterate aliens, all while solving puzzles to progress.

Goldeneye - N64
Anyone else remember epic multiplayer battles? We used to stay up until morning wired on Mountain Dew and stoned as shit, tearing it up with all the weapons. Several options and gun varieties, so many characters, good maps, and solid gameplay. And the single player was pretty damn good, in terms of stringing the movie plot along with the levels, and overall enjoyability. Remember trying to unlock the invincibility cheat? Set the standard for next gen FPS's IMO.

Halo series - Xbox
Delivered some solid games at a time when good story driven FPS were lacking. Gameplay was smooth and intuitive, story was passable, and delivered plenty of variety to keep gamers on their toes. Online multiplayer play on Xbox Live is massive, and plenty of good options and weapons to keep things changing up.


I personally believe Goldeneye was probably the most important at the time. Great immersive single player game, challenging cheats to unlock for lots of replay value, and excellent multiplayer play.

Which do you guys think was most important game for it's time? And which is the best FPS currently out there in your opinon?

right now it is COD4, damn that game is great.

Quake was also pretty important when it comes to online FPS.

The game I was most into at one time was Unreal Tournament 2k3- bombing run. It was such a great team game, and a very tight community.

Call of Duty 4 is definetly the top FPS at the moment. Nothing else to say that you dont already know.

Halo 2 is my favorite. I was very disappointed with Halo 3 tho, COD4 is pretty damn good but Halo 2 is where its at

For me I just couldn't put Rainbow Six Vegas 2 while playin' online so thatz my favorite right now even tho i had 2 sell it cuz it broke

I really enjoyed the Metroid Prime series. Whoever made those games had to have been on something.

for horror, I'm going with doom 3...put some head phones on....turn up the volume

anyways for me the first fps i've played was a demo for Powerslave(PC)...that shit was bomb

then it was doom, good times...that last level, with that square room, and that big ass mofo comes running out, always kept me on my seat

then ya goldeneye, awesome times playing four player

Unreal tournament (PC) the first time I played this game, I got a rush like no other (plus spent some time making some maps)

Half-life was great, Team Fortress, now that was addicting...damn I needs to buys the 2

and well ya all the good games up to now...halo,cod4,

Definitely COD4 on Pc No ps3 could compare in the graphics department . COD5 comming out nov. 11 will crush cod4 most likly though.

Old school console games like Goldeneye were amazing at the time and still have amazing replay value but I find I've had more fun with pc games like:

Half Life 1&2
F.E.A.R
Far Cry
CS 1.3 - 1.6
COD4

These games are just way more fun to me, and I think the only real way to play FPS games is on a pc

I still love Goldeneye 007. I play multi on that to this day.
COD4 is, in my opinion, the best realistic FPS out today.
I vote Portal for another great FPS. Does anyone else love their weighted companion cube?

Portal is definitely a great game. Very clever and original.

Doom was so fuckin' sweet back in the day... man, I should play that game again.


Goldeneye was awesome too. I used to turn on the cheats just so I could go shoot people point blank in the ass.
...I was a weird kid.

My list is in terms of the multiplayer aspect of the game.... All these had or have such great multiplayer communities.
