Re: Want to slim down, tone up, or gain muscle? Ask me for advice on anything!

Hey, I've been sort of researching this myself, I'm 5'10 and 170, looking to gain muscle and slim down. Should I just rapidly put on the muscle, and then slim down? That's what I've been thinking but want someone to back me up, haha.

Hey I'm 18, 5'5" and about 170 pounds. I've been working out with weights every Monday and aiming to run on the elliptical for an hour or so each day. I may also start the Couch to 5K plan someone posted around here. My concern is... my favorite feature is my ass, and I don't want to lose it. Will running/elliptical hurt this? I used to be a lot skinnier and it was still pretty big then, so should I just depend on my genetics?

because your want to persevere your booty while you lose weight, and you're already lifting weights, I would suggest you include squats, deadlifts and/or lunges into your weight-lifting routine - especially squats.

Squats build mass and strength in your core abdominal muscles, your hips, your glutes/rear end, your quadriceps/thighs and lower back. Deadlifts also primarily target the gluteus maximus area, the thighs and hamstrings. Lunges are probably the least effective of the exercises I mentioned, but they can help you reach your goals if you want to put them in your weight program- they target the butt, the thighs and other parts of the legs as well.

to put it simply, squats they will help you grow a nice, shapely ass if you don't already have one, and if you want, you can keep working on it and build a larger rear than before.
I would recommend maybe lifting twice a week if that fits into your schedule, and experimenting with the different kinds of squats to see which ones work the best for you.
Front squats focus more on the thighs/quads, while back squats emphasize the booty more, for example. i recommend you Google all of these exercises and try them out to see which ones you like the best, if you don't already know what they are. start off slow with light weights or even with no weights and work your way up to what feels comfortable and what you think helps you reach your goals; try out different amounts of reps and sets, etc.

Since your genetics apparently give you a larger rear, I think incorporating squats, as well as deadlifts or lunges if you choose; into your weight-lifting and running program, along with a healthy diet, will encourage your booty to keep most of its size, or even add more size if you wish, while you lose weight.

Personally, I had almost no ass at all before I started dead-lifting and squatting ( I have Asian/Caucasian small booty genes ). Now, 4-5 months later, I have junk in the trunk and a lot more overall strength than when I started seriously getting into strength training. I look and feel 10 times better than I did in July or August thanks to a good diet and a lot of weight-training, especially squats

BTW I am a 25 year old Female

Re: Want to slim down, tone up, or gain muscle? Ask me for advice on anything!

Hey, cool thread. I'm just under 6ft, problem is I've got quite a bit of a beer belly/gut primarily down to bad eating and a real lack of regular exercise. Is there any specific advice (if I was given a pound every time my doctor has said "Start eating right and exercise "I would be a very rich man) you could give me that could maybe trim/tone me up in a drastic way? I'm not looking for a quick fix, this is something I'm willing to spend time on.

Not sure about my exact weight, but last time I checked I was 14 stone (so about 196lbs if my conversion is up to scratch).

Thanks

Re: Want to slim down, tone up, or gain muscle? Ask me for advice on anything!

heyy, i just finised reading through the pages in this thread and i believe alot of the advice you gave i can apply to myself. Im an 18 yr old female just started college and maintain a weight of 154-156 im 5'5. Except for the last month ive been working out regularly for the past 3-4 months. I need to tone up my arms, stomach (love handles are driving me crazy!!!!!!!!) and work on getting a bigger butt. I used to do an hour of cardio atleast 3 days a week and then used some weight machines for my arms after that but that entire routine wasnt effective.I felt better and looked a little better but wasnt really dropping the desired weight. I need a plan that will help me drop to about 145-150 while toning up. I LOVE the stair master and eliptical i also would do treadmill at a speed of 2.9 which is not a jog. Also i have a bad habit of only eating 1 or 2 times a day and making it big meals(taco bell, outback, pancakes, omlettes etc) Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
