There are people who read books at bars? Color me as confused as you.
Well, I guess it's a sw of Portland thing?

I don't know, I don't really go to bars a whole lot myself. A few out here on the east side every once in a while, but they're mostly filled with douchebags who probably don't even own a book.
I'd rather have peace and quiet when I'm reading a book, but I guess if you're only there in the hopes that someone will talk to you... might as well pass the time with something.

You might as well try to read a book in a movie theater or at a concert if you're going to try to read at a damn bar.

The reason is actually very convoluted; deep; edgy. It is because (drum-roll) I like to get drunk, and I also like to read. Combining the two while getting the fuck out of my apartment rules.
Admit it, folks, I fucking fascinate you.

yeah I see books and laptops at local neighborhood bars, not tavern type places, but like pub-style/
yeah, I usually see girls reading at "pub style" places, I guess....but at a bar with a drink. idk. it's not like they're at a table reading while waiting for food(which is something I used to do quite a bit).
I was hoping to hear from one of those girls who partakes in this activity, but it appears there aren't alot of you around the city.

I'm a dude, but I go to the local dive every once in a while with a book.

Lol
Naw, I guess I can understand that.
Just me personally, if I wanted to read a book and drink at the same time, I'd be sitting in my apartment in the quiet or up on the mountain chillin' by the river.
And when I think about getting out of my apartment and having a drink, there's usually no books involved...
But I can appreciate breaking the social norms.

I mean..we all see plenty of your typical drunk girl at bar, talkin loud, stumblin from person to person, still talkin loud.
If I saw a lady reading a book in a bar..I'd be like "Now what the shizizzle is this?"
I'd step up and do some talkin..
BUT..here in reality land..they're all just drunk and ditzy. Ah well..work with what ya got right?

I like the way you put that, my reasons are quite similar.
I've thought about busting a book out at my old stand by bar more than a few times... not because I wanna get hit on though- just to pass the time at my boyfriend's show, or because I'm bored (not a huge fan of bars)
