its lookin good so far, keep goin'!

i'd suggest not making the joint quite so fat, it doesnt even look like he's physically holding it

once you're done with the whole piece, keep going! you're never done with vector art

Working on joint shading. This looks better so far I think.

Still don't like the shirt. It looks too "bubbly" to me.

I'd simplify the grass, or fade the colors a bit. It's a little distracting at the moment because the background colors seem more saturated than those in the foreground.

Yes I'm aware of this. I haven't decided if I wanted to fix it either way though.

I'm toying with the idea of leaving it that way to suggest "he views the world so vibrantly and saturated because of what he has inhaled and consumed."

I like that idea a lot, but in order to articulate this clearly you'll probably need to add a few more items or distortions. I'm sure whatever you end up doing will be wicked judging by what you've got so far

Thanks. :D I'm considering having some vine with vibrant blooms creeping around his arm, but not sure if I want to go that far.

Might add other plant-based "drugs" if it seems to fit.

Any suggestions from anyone?

Working without a background most of the time still.

Here's a couple suggestions:

1: you could put some smooth, curly vector vines in the background... like the kind in my sig

2: you could have the background kind of take over the foreground, maybe have his eyes and the bg be noticably similar in color.

3: don't listen to me, do what mary jane tells you

Nice job on that.

To me though, the ear screws with my eyes, it looks like he is giving a thinbs up or something?? maybe shade the hand a little bit different.

The mushroom/s look out of place, prob would look better at a diff angle.

The shirt can look a little better, but it doesnt look shitty.
Overall it's really good, I know i couldnt do that.

Might have Hawaiian Baby Woodrose vines aroud his arm, etc, with a few blooms.

Also adding one more mushroom.

hah, the caterpillar is great

You should animate it to walk up and down his arm

and I must say good job at gathering references, not many people seem willing to take the time when its an absolutely vital step imo.
I go a little overboard myself with it, I seem to spend more time looking for good references than actually drawing. I just hope I can build up a big enough picture library that I'll already have everything I need for future projects.

I like the caterpillar too, but my best friend thinks that it's creepy.

I hadn't even considered animation! If I feel like it, I may animate it to make the caterpillar move, the flowers bloom (not added yet), his eyes blink, and make the smoke move somehow as well.. haha that'd be awesome.

I like to draw life-like/realistic, which is why I search for psychedelic mushrooms that grew in grass and searched for a "mind-altering" plant with vines... so I love reference pictures.

A few years ago I printed out over 60 pages of various body positions and they were nondescript naked girls and females. My grandmother threw them away, not knowing what they were for.. ):

Anyway, this is the Hawaiin Baby Woodrose vine I'm working on:
