Where the Buffalo Roam. I prefer this film over Fear and Loathing for a Hunter S. Thompson depiction. Bill Murray is the balls.

#1 recommendation:
Purple Rain with Prince. His quirkiness is hilarious, and his onstage performances are hypnotizing. If you got a decent sound system (see bottom), it’ll be that much better.
Then, after you finish the movie, pop in Dave Chappelle’s true Hollywood story featuring Prince. Gut busting.

Batman Begins. If you haven’t seen it, the soundtrack and directing is pretty tight.

Sunshine (director boyle). Like Armageddon, just trippier , with a muted super-realism.

28 days later (director boyle). Scary movie, good visuals though.

Blow and Requiem are both great movies, but a little intense and depressing to watch while “altered” imho.

Anime below:
Miyazaki films. If you only watch one, Spirited Away:
• Princess Mononoke, 1997 film
• Spirited Away, 2001 film (winner, Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, 2002)
• Howl's Moving Castle, 2004 (nominee, Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, 2005)

Satoshi Kon:
Paprika. Good audiovisuals, but plot a bit long and convoluted. .

If you want a cheap but good sound setup, it’s really cheap to do these days if you shop right. Stereo equipment, unlike other technologies age really well. In fact, some people claim they get even better with age. You’ll need:
Receiver:
Newer and more expensive ones just support more features and formats which most people don’t need. There are sound improvements in the $500+ range, but everything between from $0-$500 sounds pretty much the same. So you can either buy used (make sure it’s got at least a composite cable (red yellow white)) for your DVD player, or you can wait for a deal on a new Onkyo for $100 on the hot deals forums (slickdeals.net).
Speakers:
Get old school used quality brand speakers used. I got 2 tower Infinity brand seakers with 15” subwoofers for $75 each on craigslist. They are like twenty years old but they are better than my brand new $220 each ($400 each retail) Boston acoustic VR2.
Cables:
Monoprice.com. 100 ft 16-gauge like $14. Composite cables $2-3 each.
