Psychedelic Digital Paintings (Big Download!)

Hey everyone! I'm new here, and thought that I would introduce myself with a few drawings! Since I was a kid I've always been interesting in art, I liked sketching out monsters and knights and fantasy stuff, but ever since I discovered the huge artistic potential of marijuana, I've experimented with a completely new way of creating. Whereas I used to draw exclusively in black and white I now can't stop flooding what I do with colour! Asides for the Jimi Hendrix and John Frusciante (the two guitarists), whom I drew and then scanned, these were made entirely with a digital tablet and Photoshop.

I can't explain it but I've never really felt like I really created these. I kind of get into a trance and they seem to just create themselves! It's an amazing experience really, has anyone else felt like this when drawing or painting while under the influence?

Enjoy!

VERY good shit man. You've got an excellent sense of visual rhythm while making the whole very spontanious.

I don't draw all that well when I'm under the influence unless there is some sort of amphetimines involved, then I will go into a kind 6 hour trance . The ideas that I do have, I usually do a shitty sketch and then finish it later when I'm not so high. heh and like you, I never really did color works until I started smokin mj.

what kind of tablet do you use? I bought myself a 9x12 Intuos2 a few years ago, probably the best computer/art buy i've made.
check out my site if you have a chance, the address is in my sig.

again good stuff +rep

Hehehe, I got an Intuos 2 9x12 as well! It's my favorite toy.

Highinhouston: Well most people will recommend Wacom since it's by FAR the most popular tablet brand. It's what I have myself and it works beautifully, but to be honest I've never tried another kind.

Anyways, I really dig your stuff Palmer, it's cool that you try and experiment with a lot of different original styles, even if my favorites are still the good ol' psychedelic stuff like Sun God and Psych. Great work!

thats the size of the working area on the tablet 9 inches by 12. I've never used a non wacom tablet either. I have never felt the need to. Wacoms are sweet pieces of hardware, it does everything it claims to do. My only wish is that that surface would be more like paper or canvas. Its has too little friction.

thanks highinhouston, that school bus picture had real potential, but i lost interest before I could get it anywhere near completion

andypl: its funny how much my style has changed. I was always strictly photorealism, like my picture of early tenor sax Coleman Hawkins. It was usually mechanical and fairly sterile feeling. I didn't understand abstract art and wrote it off for a long time... but that was before my first hallucinogenic experiance . The transformation was night and day with my understanding of art. I'm all about finding the perfect curves in nature, subtle line weights and patterns now. Its good to be able to express the superreal world that our minds usually surpress out of selfpreservation.

I used to think I was a worthless artist because I couldnt recreate things realistically. Then I smoked my first J, and I set off reading furiously about psychedellics and the psychedellic experience, and this opened me up to a whole new meaning of what art is. Art isnt how well I could draw something, it was what I could actually think of drawing, this led me to not create with the desire to imitate but to create with the desire to create.

Those are fucking AWESOME. I just wish the hendrix one was a little bigger so I could use it as my desktop in full, but it works perfect nonetheless!
