Ok, that Alpha you got, is a sick camera, do you have a dedicated macro lens? I have a TAMRON 90mm macro I use, I set the camera to AUTO or APERTURE priority mode. Use a tripod if you can, also I like to to just crank out the mag. level to it's greatest extent (crank the lens as far as it will go), then, use a handheld stance (with elbows tucked tight into your sides) to physically move the camera in and out to get a desired plane of focus (take time to see what is most pleasing to your eye, and give this focal priority) also, (I can't stress this point enough) LIGHTING. Go outside if you can, bud shots look their best under natural sunlight.
