Define "artist."

I can easily name musicians, but are you looking for painters and the like?

If not, then:

-Jimmy Hendrix
-Bob Marley
-Eric Clapton
-Ozzy

The list goes on.

EDIT:

Nevermind, I didn't read the last sentence of your post, my bad.

Does absinthe count as a drug? --> Van Gogh

/e: Man.. why don't you just google. This is what I found in about 2 minutes:

Try Arnulf Rainer, I know he did some experimentation..

Francis Bacon's most noteable work was painted when he was drunk/hung over...

Andy Warhol

EDGAR ALLEN POE....

he was most definitely an alcoholic and i believe a heroine addict....

Most of the major ones have been covered, but I figured I'd add a few to the list:

Jean-Michel Basquiat
Wallace Berman
Marina Abramovic

.

If you are trying ti see if you can be a sucessful painter and still do drugs.
I think that all depends on you.
Dont worry about others.
I believe art comes from within the artist.

I stronly condone smoking to help with art.

There are many surrealist paintings, but Dali is one of few who is able to convince that this other world could also be real. It may be because he did not paint from his imagination or by combining real elements into surreal components; it may be because he never hid the fact that he was an avid drug taker… and before meeting the love of his life, his wife Gala, whom he considered to be his muse, he had also made it known that he considered himself to be “the Great Masturbator”.

Just because he insinuated that he didn't need to take drugs because his artistic efforts were just as trippy as any drug you could take does not mean that he didn't take drugs. It's common knowledge that he experimented with recreational drugs.

OR - maybe it's one of the most prestigious contemporary art centers in the United States??? Basically anyone with any involvement in the art world would agree. In fact I plan on traveling to Minneapolis in the near future with the sole purpose of visiting the Walker. But to each his own.
