Strange Little Creatures - Sci Fi Flash Fiction
Okay, this is a very short story touching on the topic of transhumanism. It needs a little tweak here and there, but it has the general idea. Please tell me what you think of it.
Strange Little Creatures
Mark! Mark! Wake up, Mark!
Mark turned over to his side. His little brother, Zeebum, was standing in front of him.
You said we were going to the park today, whined little Zeebum.
We are, when I wake up, Mark said, and then plopped back into bed.
Oh no Mark, whined the Zeebum. We have to go now. There are humans there. Trellin saw them himself. He was there with his ma.
Humans. I’ve always promised to teach you about them. Okay, let me get ready, and we’ll go to the park right now.
Mark got out of bed and set his little robot helpers to tidy up his room. They whirred into action, hopping around with old shoelaces and music disks, rearranging the room how they thought was best.
Mark raced Zeebum to the park, where they spent the first five minutes tossing rocks into the stream. They then made their way across the park and hid in a spot amongst the hedges where the humans could not see them. There were two of them, and they seemed to be talking to each other, using their mouths.
Mark, look! Strange little creatures!
Hush Zee, we don’t want their attention. But, yes they are quite strange. And little. I don’t think the taller one would reach my shoulders.
So did we really come from that? The little Zeebum whispered.
Yes, Zee, our great-great grandparents looked a bit like that.
So how come we don’t look like that?
Well, we have many things better than they do. Like, they can’t breathe in water for more than five hours, but we can do it forever. The machines and the scientists work together to keep making new things to make us better and better. Those humans can only go so far. Their bodies take time to adapt to the changes, and some of our parts are too complicated for their bodies.
Zee sat in silence, staring at the humans. His eyes darted rapidly over them, scrutinizing their every feature. He was fascinated by their very nature.
Mark can we go see them? Please... I wanna go see them. Zeebum clasped all his hands together.
Okay, I’ll take you there. But you be nice to them, and don’t do anything silly.
He picked up the Zeebum and propped him up on his shoulders. He casually walked up to the humans, placing him down in front of them.
Um… hello there, Mark spoke through to their voice chips.
“Hi there,” they responded, using their mouths.
