Recently finished:
Stephen Pressfield - Gates of Fire fictional soldier's eye view of the battle of Thermopylae. Epic, badass, intelligent, philosophically insightful. Like a satisfying meal that doesn't leave you feeling bloated, this book has everything. Friedrich Nietzsche - The Genealogy of Morals Objective look at human morality throughout history. Especially interesting is the fact that in virtually every language, words for moral righteousness are semantically tied to nobility. Three cheers for dogmatism. Barbara Kingsolver - The Poisonwood Bible Poetically written and powerful. Currently reading: Bret Easton Ellis - American Psycho dark, hilarious, and poignant satire Richard Dawkins - The God Delusion Darwinian look at worldly superstitions, articulates virtually every thought I have about the absurdity of beliefs and convictions. I no longer feel alone as a rationalist in a sea of amoral retardation. Sharon Kay Pennman - The Sunne In Splendour Does for The War Of The Roses what Stephen Pressfield did for the Battle of Thermopylae. Also corrects Shakespeare's lies (though he really didn't have a choice) about Richard III. Khaled Hosseini - The Kiterunner Not terrible, not good. Decent popcorn novel, but way below my intellect level. I'm only reading it for my novel class. Emily Bronte - Wuthering Heights I'm only five chapters in, too soon to make any solid judgements but it's been good so far. Coming up soon: Kurt Vonnegut - Slaughterhouse Five

I'm reading:
James Clavell - Shogun This book is a real adventure with incredibly good writing. I'm only 200 pages out of nearly 1200, but I can already tell that it's going to be one of the better books I've read. Herman Hesse - Siddhartha I am going to begin this tonight. It's for school, but I have a feeling I'm going to like it. |

Tripping - An anthology of true-life psychedelic adventures - Charles Hayes - it actually has conversations with Terence McKenna and gives loads of insight to LSD, Salvia, DMT, Psilocybin, peyote, MDMA, nutmeg, 2C-B, opium, pcp, dxm, cannabis, and many more.
The Secret Chief Revealed - Myron J. Sotlaroff - still getting through this one, tough to delve into if your mind isn't completely in it. It is conversations with Leo Zeff, a pioneer in the underground psychedelic therapy movement. Came highly recommended for more insight. Peaceful Warrior - Dan Millman - Great read for everyone and anyone who has ever gone through a depressive state or negative patch in their life. Uplifting and quite a page turner. The movie, which was just released on DVD, does a great job at capturing the most important parts. |
