Yeah, I checked for mould and I'm almost certain it is mould free. But thanks anyway.

Re: Did I get 'grit weed'?

Sounds more like it was sprayed with something rather than gritted. Either (hopefully) to add weight or to produce some other effect.

Yeah this is more what I was thinking. I think 'grit' was the wrong word to use. I just can't understand how it is only detectable after burning

Re: Did I get 'grit weed'?

that watery/oily substance could be the resin thats being seperated from the weed when burning. Why it would do that, I don't know. haha
break it down and roll a blunt, see how it burns then?

Very true. Please stick around because not everyone is like that, and most posters are actually helpful.

As far as your problem goes I think it may have been sprayed as well, that's all I can say without pics...

Re: Did I get 'grit weed'?

OK thanks everyone for your input. I just did a test on this weed (without being stoned this time) . I took a small bud and put a lighter to it. Immediately, it started to burn, and it fizzled as it burned. Once it had stopped, I put the ash in between my two fingers and rubbed them together. Almost immediately, the ash turned into an oily substance and this does not smell like ash should. (It had a very, very, mild, chemical, waxy smell.)
I'm glad that I never smoked much of this, but instead of throwing it all away now, I have just stared to water cure the buds. After 5 - 7 days of water curing, I will test it again and see if I still get this problem.

This is particularly worrying bacuase of the fact that there are no visible or olfactory sign of contamination (aside from the smoke smelling a little 'off', but hardly noticeable). I will post a result of the water cure once the water turns clear (est. 5 - 7 days).

Once again, thanks for you input everyone, and if you happen to aquire weed that sounds similar to this DON'T smoke it. Chuck it away, or try water curing it (if my cure solves the problem.) It looks like 'grit' weed is getting more organised and specialised than ever. They have moved on from easily spotted glass and sand, and now are using something that is almost undetectable. All I know is, it had me, and countless others fooled; and judging by the shit left on my fingers, that is NOT going to be good for you, or your lungs.

- No visible contamination: Close inspection reveals that only trichromes are visible. There are no glass beads, sand, sugar, quartz... nothing.
- Smell is not out of the ordinary: Obviously, smell changes from strain to strain, so there is no 'normal' smell.
- Sparkles slightly when burned.
- Very hard ash produced
- Ash turns into a waterey/oily substance when rubbed
- No sore throat/chest pain experienced (yet) lol

Sounds like it just wasn't flushed properly. I've had a few different bags that crackled a bit when smoked. One of them happened to be from a local grower, I asked him about it, and he said he did not know what "flushing" was. Basically, if the ferts stay in the buds and are not flushed properly, it can cause a crackling sound when burned, and that probably explains the weird ashes.

seriously get off your high horse nobody cares if you're the pot smoking champion of the world, you provided no insight to the discussion and there might be a serious problem that should be addressed. anyway, i had the same problem with my weed one time, but luckily i was low on cash and only bought a half-eighth, i threw it away after i was poking at my bowl and noticed the disgusting ash, at first i thought my friend spit into it or something on accident, but it happened again on the next bowl we smoked so into the trash it went.
