Lighting joints is an acquired skill, I usually light the twisted end then blow out the flame, then suck so the paper burns evenly. If you suck too hard while lighting a joint usually you will over burn one side completely and waste some weed.

If you suck in too hard (depending if you're smoking from a bong/pipe) it will go out. It happens to everyone but I guess its hard at first to find a balance between

1) not sucking in too hard and making the lighter/flame go out.
&
2) not letting the flame sit on the weed and just burn/waste the weed.

Yeah but also remember to take the flame off once the herb is rolling, cause you don't want to burn it too badly.

what i do is, i hold the joint in my hand and with my right hand i have my lighter. i let the flame hit the very tip for abuot 2 or 3 seconds. the j will be lit and thats it. i dont like lighting joints while there right in my face

Suck lightly when you do it. Buy a lighter and while watching TV just practice. Or get a Zippo and those are easy. Or get one of those you just push a button, and the flames are big. Also, it's not a big deal. Don't sweat it.

you have to make sure there is enough air flow (suck hard) going through the bowl to draw the flame toward the pot. also try to get your thumb as far away from the flame as possible without letting go of the fuel button

also the more you grind up the weed, the easier its going to catch fire. more surface area = more burning

Try taking the saftey thing off it its even on, if its a cheap lighter (like the clear plastic ones) there hard to get goin. but if its a bic, just take off the saftey and hopefully it'll be easier. ( heres a vid showing you how
