Anyway, they dida great experiment with music and flowering plants. If memory serves, they tried several types of music: classical, pop, metal, etc. What they showed was only the hard-core death-metal music made any measurable difference - and that difference was profound.

My grow is too close to me for me to do what they did, which was blast the music at the plants in what I would describe as a non-stop assault. I'm too old to cope with 12 or 24 hours of blaring metal. I think maybe I was always too old for that, actually.

But, I digress.

I don't have time to hunt for it. But, I bet a quick search would turn up info on that experiment and the specifics involved. We all have stereos to experiment with. So, it's a very accessible and robust experimental possibilty.

If results similar to the TV show can be achieved, it would be interesting to find if any particular pieces of music within the genre are more or less effective. That could get interesting, eh?

I love the spirit of this thread, by the way - looking at things from a new perspective and allowing for the fact that, as much as we know about these things, there is much more we don't know about plant and animal physiology and function.

The fact is, people can get together on forums and carry out a reasonable semblance of objective research with results that can be duplicated, substantiated and quantified. After all, that's why they built this internet widget in the first place, right?

i hadn't even thought about that till now but they did have some amazing although keep in mind it's hollywood results. Mythbusters is great but remember these guys were special effects artist for years and several of their show's have been dis-proven. Albeit most are legit and i think this one is.

I find this very interesting as i am a science lover. the whole ultrasonic soundwave idea sounds like a potential breakthrough for botany. This makes me think, perhaps the plants are using the soundwaves in much the same way they use the light waves- to power thecalvin cycle. Possibly new trophism?... audiotrophism perhaps? What really struck me is that "plants have been shown to grow in darkness with supersonic soundwaves.

The diagram you posted looks like a test question from applied physics (reemerging nightmares)... why didn't i pay more attention in that class?

That's a pretty good hypothesis, actually. Since plants use light energy only as a power source for the chemical reaction of photosynthesis (H20+CO2+sunlight=C6H12O6+O2) it's certainly possible that ultrasonic frequencies provide a new power source to this equation (H20+CO2+sound energy=C6H12O6+O2+bigfuckingpotplants)
Or maybe as someone said a while ago, the frequencies resonate with the naturally produced sounds from the plants themselves to do something.

One way or the other, I went to radio shack today to buy the necessary equipment, except for the requisite tweeter, which I bought online. Gonna solder that bitch together, and come back with results over the next few weeks b4 i ship off to college. who knows, maybe it'll be awesome!

PS It's sad to me that you're a science lover but you don't love the best of all the sciences-physics

Hey all! I've been following this thread for quite some time and decided to see if this technique had merit. Months ago I bought a product called Agri-Zap. It's a plug-in pest control device used for repelling rodents. I picked one up online for $30. It's basically a small ultrasonic speaker that modulates between the 32khz and 64khz frequency. The literature claims this frequency range is painful to small rodents but larger animals, such as dogs, would be unaffected. I don't have pets, but this statement is likely true. From an evolutionary stand point, smaller animals would have to have more sensitive hearing than larger predators in order to survive. Anyways, in the months since I bought this device, I have noticed a marked increase in the vigor and vitality of my plants. When I was running hydro I had to feed my plants at full strength solution. I normally never have to do that! I know that this doesn't count as a controlled experiment, but for how cheap the device was and how well it worked, I'd say it's well worth the risk. I recommend others try this and see for themselves. It's also a better alternative to blasting metal 24hrs a day for three months (not that metal isn't great music, mind you). Look at it this way; if I'm wrong, any potential rodent problem will be solved and that's the worst case scenario.

Yeah definitely, according to the product literature it operates on less than .20 cents/month. The speaker is no bigger than the palm of your hand, so it doesn't use much electricity.

speaking of frequencies 528hz frequencies is considered the healing frequency and i found a track with 528 and some others and play it on a loop next to the plants which i grow hydroponically...

if someone ask me what it does to the plant i have no answer... i will be doing a experiment with a control group to compare the growth rate.

but what the 528 hz frequencies does change the water structure to a more crystalline hexagonal shape... this research was around for a while now mostly in japan and korea...
the most famous one worth looking into is dr. masaru emoto...

another thing about this particular frequencies is that they use it for genetic engineering to enhance the cellular regrowth...

there are some mp3 tracks online, and what i do is loop it with some classical music... and there were tons of studies done saying music is beneficial for any growing life form...

well,

I add the sounds to a ipod, and hooked the ipod + speakers up in the room, I mean in side the mothering chamber basically.

I measured the shortest plant and put one speaker next to it, and I will see whats up in the morning

I do play music to my little seedlings and usually it's classical although i have switched to a much faster techno sound track and I think it makes a difference. the BPM is the only thing to have increased in my case.
