My 1st indoor grow was hybrid potting. I used 20ltr buckets with many holes drilled into the bases. 1/2" of stone in the base for better drainage. Then mixed potting soil with a HEAVY amount of vermiculite and perlite, especially perlite. I'd estimate about 30% soil tops, and mix that shit REALLY WELL. It's impossible to overwater this setup: excess water will drain off in about 5mins, but the vermic and soil will retain all the water the plants needed. High perlite content ensures adequate airation in the pots, so really don't skimp on it. Don't go crazy with the water, you cant drown the plants in this mixture, you can flush all the nutrients out of the soil! I used a weakened nutrient ratio in my water to offset the the soil's natural content.
This system has some advantages: 1st of all it's really cheap and easy! no pumps or tubes, just buckets with an extreme amount of drainage. I watered every day, u easily get a feel for how much water to use because runoff has completed so quickly after you pour it in. 2nd you have the backup of soil's premixed nutrient package but still get to experiment with adding your own via the water.
Being an indoor newbie I made many mistakes on my grow. Nutrient poisoning is a very common problem, remember to be very careful, alil too much is WAY too much, especially when they are very young, I came back one day to find the obvious evidence of this early on. With pots like this nuit flushing is a breeze, just run a shitload of water through, recovery was evident 36hrs later. I never took these plants to flowering as my inexperience with artificial light combined with greed spelled a stretchy disaster! However thats nothing to hold against this soil system.

I doubt may pro's use this system, and in truth it's really just modified soil growing, but it is an easy and safer way to learn about hydro instead of taking that leap into soiless growing.

to you all

how much medium to use?

i have a rubbermaid container using ebb and flow setup. the dimens. are 16"x24"x5" deep i have about 2" of clay pellets at the bottom, its 6 gal total. So question is

-how much medium do i need at what depth?
- how high should the water raise?
- Would it be better to just suspend the baskets by the top and let the roots dangle down?

thanks

Drip System

When using a Drip System, should I have it run constantly for 24 hours? Or what should the time intervals be from turning it on and off?

Thanks

i prefer hydro over soil for the simple reason that your plant are able to drink exactly as much water as they want and more importantly when they want it...there is no way you can stress your plant out by over or under watering...that means more energy for building big king kong dick buds.
