If you don't want to use tap water,

the cheapest alternative (other than rainwater), is to buy a RO/DI unit (ebay is usually cheapest). Can probably make 5000 gallons and cost about $100.

Can drink the water too.

Why bother giving the pet shop profit. Also if the shop doesn't maintain the RO unit, nothing you can do about it.

I buy I gallon plastic jugs of DISTILLED water @ 64 cents per gallon The distillation process strips the water from most of its minerals. That means the only nutrients my plant gets are the ones that I'm giving it. The only thing I have to adjust is the Ph level.

Just my experience, but I thought I'd pass it on. Good luck!

i use those drinking water RO machines in front of like all grocery stores with a couple 5 gallon bottles. as long as you check the date they were last serviced, the water i get reads 0 ppm and only costs me 15cents a gallon.
