When should you top?

After how many nodes is it ideal to top.... this is if youre aiming for a 6ft plant at havest?

Umm.. topping reduces height, so unless you're growing outdoors or under multiple kilowatts, a 6 foot bush is extremely impractical.

Topping, FIMing, and LST are all techniques that redistribute plant growth regulators (specifically auxins). When these are distributed evenly, you won't have one ginormous cola but many relatively smaller (but still beefy) colas. Topping and FIMing do this by actually cutting off the main cola, while with LST you just bend the cola below the secondary branches and let gravity do the work for you.

To answer your question, though, around the third or fourth node is an ideal time to start any sort of training technique.

ok, thanks. its an indoor grow for 2 months and then outdoors. was thinking do the fim after theyre 5 weeks old and then once they go out start tying the 4 stems to hooks in ground in different directions, i am i right in thinking will make the plant wider and get more yield?
