I am going to try to grow a marijuana plant from scratch using seeds that I have gathered from various ounces, is this possible; or are the seeds not able to grow?

yes your recomended to use bag seed for your frist grow.

wet a few peper towels and fold the seeds up with the towel and store in a ziplock baggie in a dark place.

i know that ur supposed to have bagged seed, but I dont have access to it.
so i just got seeds from weed that a friend had. Will these grow or are they "dead."

edit: by bagseed do you mean purchased seed from a seedbank for seed from weed bags..?

Bag seed is a seed that came from an unknown strain of MJ that you and your buddies just smoked.

You let them float on a bowl of water for 1-2 days, then do the DUNK test. Dunking is when you tap the seed, and they sink to the bottom (suggesting that the seed is indeed alive and is capable of soaking in water). If they don't sink, it means it is dead. toss them out.

Assuming this is your first grow attempt, don't forget to read all the things you can about light cycles and soil and whatnot. Read the stickies, then read them again. Learn as much as you can before you actually start the growing process. That said, best of luck to you and your future plants.
